Adhem concept

In IPL, a "retired out" occurs when a batter voluntarily leaves the field for strategic reasons, not due to injury or illness, and cannot resume their innings without the opposing captain's consent.

Here's a more detailed explanation:
  • What it is:
A "retired out" is a strategic move where a batter chooses to leave the field, allowing another batter to take their place.

  • How it differs from "retired hurt":
Unlike "retired hurt," where a player can resume their innings after recovering from an injury, a batter who is "retired out" cannot return to bat.

  • Strategic Use:
Teams might use this tactic to bring in a more effective batter, especially in the final overs, or to allow a player to rest or make way for a specialist finisher.

  • First Instance:
Ravichandran Ashwin became the first batter in IPL history to be retired out, during a match between Rajasthan Royals and Lucknow Super Giants in 2022.

  • Rules:
A batter may retire at any time during their innings when the ball is dead and must inform the umpires of the reason before allowing play to proceed.

It's toss time. Gill and Pandya, once IPL teammates, now on opposite sides. Gill gives the coin a flick, heads is the call and heads it is. Mumbai Indians will bowl first. He says he is unsure about the pitch, and with dew also being a factor, bowling first was the decision he arrived at. Different soil surfaces play different, he acknowledges, and he reckons batting second on the black soli pitch is always more preferable. Everyone is ready to go and excited and the goal is very clear: to do well as a group, back each other and lift them up when they are down. Pandya comes back in, of course, but he does not quite remember if there are any other tweaks, with them bowling first today.
