Although the country-wide rainfall departure is positive, the distribution remains uneven, with major rice producing states of West Bengal, Punjab, and Himachal Pradesh receiving deficit rainfall.

As of July 26, 2024, total rice sowing stood 8 percent lower compared to the same period last year, even though the overall sown area has improved by 2 percent, driven by pulses, cereals, and oilseeds.

The decrease in rice sowing could lead to a continuation of ban on the exports of rice, to fulfil domestic demand and prevent prices from shooting up.
