andhra_jp Posted October 2, 2024 Report Posted October 2, 2024 Seen this post in SOS Global FB Page Navigating the Future of Tech Management Roles I’ve noticed a troubling trend with so many layoffs in the tech industry, especially affecting roles like program managers, project managers, scrum masters, and product managers. With over 200,000 layoffs reported, it raises the question: when will this situation improve? I’m not receiving responses to my applications—just automated rejections. Is there any hope for those of us in these roles? What does the future hold for tech management professionals? I’d appreciate any insights or thoughts on navigating this challenging landscape. Thank you. Quote
andhra_jp Posted October 2, 2024 Author Report Posted October 2, 2024 Some replies It is not just tech management roles but across the board in all tech roles. The situation will start to stabilize in the next 12-18 months. That doesn't mean the rate of new job creation will be the same as in the past. The tech job market is imbalanced right now in the US with an excessive supply and low demand. It will first need to absorb that excessive glut and then it will start to stabilize. Maybe in the next 6-12 months, you will start to see the rate of lay offs will start to slow down. It will take at least 18-24 months to see some demand and supply balanced. due to cost pressures, these roles are being out of US. e.g. a project or program manager or scrum master need not be in US but can be in argentina or brazil or canada and work in US time zone. These countries are far cheaper than US. Despite the current unemployment rate remaining below 5%, I believe the real economic pain has yet to be felt.If we were truly in a recession, I would expect to see a significant increase in scrutiny of PERM and H1B filings, with Requests for Evidence (RFEs) becoming the norm, even for routine extensions. Looking back at the period between 2009-2012, it's clear that H1B and PERM applications were severely impacted, with approvals coming to a near standstill. Plus ageism is real in tech - watch out once you are 45+ Sorry, but I don’t think the hiring in IT will ever go up. I dont see some hiring picking up for some roles forever. Scrum master and project manager being the top two in that list. Add Product Manager and QA to the list Program managers, project managers and scrum masters are all being phased out atleast in product development. Product management will stay but have to wait for the market to recover. Regarding the future of technology management, align to product management or engineering management. Both of which need deep technical knowledge. Quote
