He was cleaning a shotgun..apparently.  my guess is that he wanted to show off during the birthday.. he didnt follow first rule of safety, which is to make sure to treat it as always loaded.

How can a shot gun fire accidentally and the bullet hit himself? It is not a handgun..

Any gun can fire if its completely loaded and if a striker hits the primer while  field stripping it.  Most likely he was cleaning with a bore snake running down the crown of the muzzle. 

Any action of the firearm can be produced independently without former assitance from trigger or trigger hammer assiting firing pin.

This is why when I carry my EDC i dont put a round in chamber and put the firearm in safety..it is not best of practice but atleast I am armed and safe.

He probably had a round in magazine tube and he chambered it while it going off ..he might be dipping his bore snake to clean the muzzle from front over the muzzle crown.
