After reading Mahabharata, I too have concerns on showing Karna as a hero...to be frank, I think the only  characters with such grace are bheeshma, Krishna and dharma raju

Both Kauravas and Pandavas have some great characters who have some great virtues.. Krishna fighting on behalf of Pandavas gave them the edge.. 

Even in Kalki, they show Prabhas in a negative way.. Karna’s role is powerful and selfish too.. he is trying to harm Sumati and Kalki and not trying to protect them..

did karna asked to disrobe her ? or he just shut his mouth and sat quietly without any questions when dushsana was doing the act ? sitting quietly when such an horrific act is being performed is also a larger sin.. jmo 

one of the mistakes performed by karna also is he lied to parusuram and obatined the knowledge of warrior and weapons like vijaya dhanush and shank followed with rath. 

another mistake he had his hand betrayed and killed abhimanyu... 

but there are several good things too from his side, -- he stood on his promise given to his friend duryodhan, that whatevr it takes he's awlays on his side, krishna reveals he's the true heir of pandavas and that he should be the king of the hastinapur pandavas side, but he rejected the offer although his prime goal was to be a king, but was a suth putra for a long time which he never liked, he respected his mother and did not kill the other 4 sons although they're his enemies and got a chance to kill all 4 in one strike, but he never did that, he was very loyal, honest, warrior of extra abilities, also defeated arjun several times during their clash, he lived false life just because of his word to his friend duryodhan.. he gave his kavach kundals (most powerful than most divyastras) to  indra dev, even though he knew indra came in form of a disguised brahmin, hes called as daanveer person who did most charity than any other in hastinapur. 

even at time of death krishna took the last good thing (in the form of gold teeth - his good deeds) from him, which was protecting karna from his death, 

just cos he did few mistakes one could not say that he's a bad person or not a person to be praised (like they showed in kalki movie), 

every character in mahabharat has good and bad associated, except krishna - 🙏

I thought we would be looking into Sanskrit version of bharatam written by veda vyas. Geeta press gorakphar has been printing these Sanskrit to hindi version books of Ramayan, Mahabharata, Bhagavad-Gita over 60 years. You called TTD book as “moola bharatam” so let’s look into it.

I will be posting some sloka meanings and my contention with dharma raju during the gambling episode where he bets Draupadi and also some of his decisions. For now, we will see the sabha parv which I was pointing out in this thread about dharma raju used Draupadi as bet in gambling.

Context Dhuryodhana wants to steal all the properties of Dharma raju and sakuni wants to help him.

తాత్పర్యం: 'ధర్మరాజుకు జూదం అంటే ఎంతో ఇష్టం. కానీ అందులో ఎంతమోసం ఉంటుందో అతనికి
తెలియదు. నేను ద్యూతవిద్యలో చాలా నేర్పరిని. ఆ ధర్మరాజును సులభంగా ఓడించి, అతని రాజ్యసంపదనంతా
నీకిస్తా. ఎందుకు అలా దుఃఖిస్తావు'- అని శకుని అనగానే సుయోధనుడు సంతోషించాడు. తండ్రి పాదాలమీద
వ్రాలాడు. ‘ఈ శకుని అభిప్రాయాన్ని అంగీకరించు' అన్నాడు. అందుకు ధృతరాష్ట్రుడు ఇలా అన్నాడు.

Shakuni talking about Dharma raju’s affection to gambling and dharma raju don’t know how much deceive is involved but dharma raju clearly talks of cheating involved in gambling. He says about this in 167 to 169 sloka.

124 to 150 slokas discussions about dhrutarashtra asking to construction the palace for gambling and requesting Duryodhana not gamble and pick up fight with dharma raju, but Duryodhana is adamant.

తాత్పర్యం: గొప్పవారిచేత పొగడబడేవాడా! ఓవిదురా! ఈసభ సాటిలేని మేటి రత్నాలతో, బంగారుతో కూడుకొన్నది.
పుణ్యాత్ముడైన ధర్మరాజు, అతని తమ్ములు ఇక్కడికి వచ్చి దీనిని చూస్తే చాలా సంతోషం కలుగుతుంది. నీవు
వెళ్ళి- బ్రాహ్మణులకు ప్రియమైనవాడు, పండితులను, బంధువులను సంతోషపరచేవాడు అయిన ఆ ధర్మరాజును
వెంట పెట్టుకొనిరా.

విశేషం: ధర్మరాజును పిలిపించటం జూదమాడటానికా? సభను చూడటానికా? ఈ మాత్రం సభను ధర్మరాజు ఎన్నడూ
చూడలేదా? అయినా ఆ మయసభముందు ఇదెంత? పైగా ధృతరాష్ట్రుడు 'విశిష్టజనస్తుత!' అని విదురుణ్ణి సంబోధిస్తున్నాడు.ధర్మజునికి అనఘుడు. భూసురసఖుడు, బుధ బంధు జనానురంజకుడు అనే విశేషణాలు ప్రయోగిస్తున్నాడు. లోకం ధృతరాష్ట్రుణ్ణి గురించి నోట తీపి, అంగిట విషం' అనటం ఇందుకే కాబోలు. గుణం: అర్థవ్యక్తి.

In this sloka you will see dhrutharasthra didn’t clearly tell vidura that dharma raju has to gamble but if you see the Sanskrit to hindi version of geeta press you will find that dhrutharasthra clearing asking vidhura to tell dharmaraju that he wants him to come to this palace and gamble. Here is the below sloka in hindi.

उनसे कहना, ‘मेरी यह वच सभा अनेक कारके रनसे जटत है। इसे बमूय शया और आसनारा सजाया गया है। युधर! तुम अपने भाइयके साथ यहाँ आकर इसे देखो और इसम सुहृदोंकी द्यत-क्रीड़ा प्रारम्भ हो’ । ।

అందమై, అపూర్వమైన ఆ సభను చూడటానికి వచ్చి అందులో జూదమాడటం తగునా? చెప్పు. ఈ జూదం
కారణంగా మాలో మాకు వైరం ఏర్పడక మానదు. నీ ఆజ్ఞ మా కెట్లా మీరరానిదో, ధృతరాష్ట్రుని ఆజ్ఞ నీకూ అట్లే’
అని- చంద్రవంశప్రభువైన ధర్మరాజు విధివశాన విదురుని వెంట వెళ్ళటానికి నిశ్చయించాడు.

 Joodamaadatam kshatriya dharmam kaadu nenu dharmanni paatisthaanu kabatti aadakoodadu ani cheppadu. He really had a chance to avoid gambling by just saying no to it. but for the sake of following orders from Vidura dharma raju agrees to it even it brings enmity between Pandavas and Kauravas

Slokam 166 lo joodam aadatam kshatriya dharmam kaadu antaadu malla ikkada dharmam gaa joodam aadatam yuddam lo gelichinanta punyam antaadu. Quiet contrast to his own statement.

తాత్పర్యం: జూదమాడే కళలో నేర్పరి, లోకజ్ఞానం కలవాడు, గొప్పమేధావి, కీర్తిమంతుడు, ఉత్తమరాజనీతి చక్కగా తెలిసినవాడు ఆ జూదాన్ని నిందించటం తగునా?

తాత్పర్యం: బలహీనులైనవాళ్ళు బలవంతులను ఓడించేటప్పుడు పెక్కుమోసాలకు పూనుకోవటం ఎక్కడైనా ఉన్నదేకదా! లోకంలో ఏ విధంగానైనా జయాన్ని సాధించటమే కదా చెయ్యదగిన పని.

Sakuni clearly saying that deceiveing is part of the gambling process and will try to deceive to win the game.

తాత్పర్యం: ‘జూద మాడటానికి నీవు భయపడితే మానుకో' - అని అనగా శకునితో ధర్మరాజు ఈ విధంగా
అన్నాడు.
విశేషం: చివరకు శకుని ధర్మరాజు అభిమానాన్ని రెచ్చగొట్టి అతణ్ణి జూదానికి దించాడు.
ధర్మరాజు శకునితో జూదం బాడుట (సం. 2-53-13)

Sakuni clearly suggested he can stop the game. Dharma raju clear drop aipovachu by not playing because he was given an option.

Balavanthaaga pilichaaru annadu but sakuni clearly said u can stop if you are scared and don’t want to play. Dharma raju could have stopped the gambling but he chooses other way.

పూజించబడిన పాచికలు అమర్చుకొని కూర్చున్న శకునిని, వివింశతిని, చిత్రసేనుణ్ణి, వికర్ణుణ్ణి చూచి 'వీరిలో ఎవడు
నాతో జూదమాడే వా' డనగా అతనితో దుర్యోధనుడు ఇలా అన్నాడు.
