New SF mayor announces citywide hiring freeze on first full day in office

One day after being inaugurated as San Francisco mayor, Daniel Lurie has implemented an immediate citywide hiring freeze. The freeze, according to Lurie’s office, is part of an effort to “bring the largest budget deficit in the city’s history under control.”

Lurie announced the hiring freeze during his first department head meeting and the step, his office said, “reflects Mayor Lurie’s commitment to tackling the city’s fiscal challenges head on,” by “curbing spending and improving efficiency.”

The mayor also directed city departments to “realign programming and spending with the city’s priorities with a focus on evidence and proven results.” As part of that directive, the city will pause on new contracts that haven’t been signed or implemented.

“San Francisco is making a comeback, and I intend to put us in the best possible position to drive that growth,” Lurie said. “Our city is facing a major budget deficit, and today, the era of band-aid solutions is over. We are committed to fiscal discipline, giving San Franciscans the accountability they demand, and focusing the government on doing core things well.”

“Today marks the beginning of a new era of accountability and change at City Hall, one that — above all else — serves you the people of San Francisco. That begins now. I entered the Mayor’s race not as a politician, but as a dad who couldn’t explain to my kids what they were seeing on our streets. That has never hit me as hard as it did last month at San Francisco General Hospital. After meeting an extraordinary team of nurses, doctors, social workers, and addiction specialists — we ended our tour in the NICU. There I stood in the quiet of a nursery surrounded by babies in critical condition. Some of them recovering from fentanyl exposure. It was a heartbreaking picture of our city’s shortcomings in addressing the crisis on our streets.”
