There is difference between Jyoti and Star....

Makara Jyoti  (telugu)- manmade..its symbolic lighting of the star...

Star - is celestial body, dani darshanam cheskovali...

over the period it became the jyoti...but in same direction.

The actual story goes like this. The hills are inhabited by tribals who also celebrate Makara Sankranthi. Their celebration is marked by lighting giant sized camphor balls on huge ton barrels and extinguishing them in seconds using a huge wet sack. This huge burning pyre will be visible as a small star from the shrine. They do it numerable times but the first three rounds are only focused on.

Over a period of years this gained the attention of all and people started visiting the shrine in mid January to witness this. The natives of this holy village are aware that this is a man made way of celebration. The temple authorities give all kinds of support to the tribal group to carry out the process. It is purely the way of celebrating the festival of Makara Sankramam for the people in the hills.

The temple authorities admitted in 2009 or 2010 about this...I watched in live TV at that time (may be TV9)...Still people are going, its a belief....As you said in your message, it keeps people disciplined and a kind of Detox process...
