  - Ego?

  - Psychological Complexity (A "better" person isn’t just about intelligence or strength—it’s also about wisdom, kindness, and resilience. Improving these traits is much harder than altering DNA or brain function)

Not watering or too much water

Lack of nutrition in soil

Ego works both ways. It can destroy you completely. Hindu legends are replete with such examples like Ravana, Duryodhana.  It can also make you achieve things, through self motivation and resilience which wouldn't be possible otherwise.

While you're a young buck, ego drives you.  That's due to testosterone that keeps you that way. you want to dominate and conquer. If circumstances favour you take the alpha chair, else you stay beta but the desire persists. You would have seen such examples in your lives by now.

I think the key is "better" here. How do you define it? Better in what sense? In the realm of materialism, looks, power and wealth matter. It's understandable that those that have them have ego levels at max level

Wisdom is what life gives you when you do the grinding. Wise people are grounded. I also find them more spiritual. I can say the same thing about kindness as well.

I think some element of spirituality NOT necessarily being a sadhu with complete detachment, will let grow more as a person. You will realize it at some point. If you take the path of detachment, then you're free from "matrix" , but then your world will be alien to rest of the grinding plebs.
