https://www.thehindu.com/news/national/andhra-pradesh/kuppam-horticulture-hub-transformed-the-lives-of-farmers-says-chittoor-district-collector/article69119418.ece/amp/

The Kuppam Horticulture Hub in Chittoor District, also known as the Centre of Excellence, has emerged as a shining example of agricultural innovation and excellence. After Telugu Desam Party president N. Chandrababu Naidu returned to power, the centre regained its significance.

The Kuppam Horticulture Hub, inaugurated on January 2, 2019, under the Indo-Israel Agricultural Project, spans 22.8 acres in Kuppam mandal. It serves as a Centre of Excellence for the cultivation of flowers and vegetables, integrating Israeli technology to enhance productivity and sustainability. Its advanced infrastructure includes 19 polyhouses, water storage tanks, a cold room and grading machinery, making it a hub for cutting-edge horticultural practices.

The hub has introduced advanced techniques like drip irrigation, vertical farming, and high-yield vegetable grafting. It has produced over 64.69 lakh grafted plants and 1.94 crore non-grafted plants since its inception, generating financial returns of ₹4.24 crore and ₹2.75 crore, respectively.

Crops such as eggplants, tomatoes, melons, marigolds and capsicum are cultivated using innovative methods, ensuring higher yields with minimal resource use. Additionally, the hub has partnered with M/S FFI Bio Works Pvt. Ltd. for marigold production, earning ₹1.06 crore in profits through contract farming.

A key focus of the hub is empowering farmers through training and knowledge-sharing. Since 2018, the centre has organised 32 training programmes for farmers, officials and students, with experts from countries like Israel, Japan and the Netherlands sharing their expertise. Collaborations with companies like Netafim and Syngenta have further strengthened the hub’s role as a learning centre.

The remarkable work of the Kuppam Horticulture Hub has earned it the prestigious Scotch Award 2024.

Among 57 Centres of Excellence across India, the Kuppam hub stood out for its ability to boost farmer income, introduce cutting-edge agricultural techniques and promote sustainable practices. Experts from other States, including Mizoram, Kerala, and Haryana, have praised the hub’s advancements and expressed interest in replicating its model.

District Collector Sumit Kumar said that it has transformed the lives of farmers by making horticulture a profitable venture. “The Centre not only brings pride to Kuppam but also reaffirms its position as a national leader in horticultural innovation and excellence,” he said.

Former Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu has been touring the Kuppam constituency for the last couple of days. Addressing a public meeting the other day, he promised people to construct an airport in Kuppam so that the vegetables grown there can be exported to other countries.

Immediately after the analysis, YSR Congress’s Social Media wings sprang into action and mocked Naidu for promising an airport for a small town like Kuppam and for the talk about exporting vegetables using flights.

There is a large-scale trolling by I-PAC teams and Sakshi also picked it up.

But the fact is that these people do not have minimum knowledge about what Naidu promised.

Promising an airport to Kuppam does not mean a Passenger or International Airport. Small Cargo Airstrips are quite common across the globe where cargo planes are serviced. These planes are used for transportation of Perishable goods and e-commerce services.

What are Perishable goods? – In Kuppam, a huge majority of the public makes a living on growing vegetables. But you know, the vegetable prices fluctuate so much. For example, if Tomato is just 10 Rupees in Andhra Pradesh, it can have a good price in another state or country.

But it is not possible to transport Tomato using lorries or ships in a short time. At this juncture, these small airports will help.

If there is feasibility, they can be upgraded to domestic airports as well. But then, the close proximity to Chennai and Tirupati may rule it out.

The Noida Airport near Jewar in Gautam Buddh Nagar in Uttar Pradesh was envisioned with the same objective to help the local farmers. Prime Minister Narendra Modi himself laid the foundation stone in November 2021.

“Farmers in the region will be able to export perishable goods like vegetables, fruits, fish and produce directly to the world,” PM Modi told the public attended the meeting.

It is understandable that I-PAC and their social media teams do not have the IQ to understand all this. But it is a surprise that Sakshi does not even have a single journalist who knows this.
