Meta notified employees affected by the layoffs beginning at 5:00 a.m. m. today, via a memo sent by Chief People Officer Janelle Gale

 

This Monday, February 10, Meta, Mark Zuckerberg’s company, began its latest round of layoffs. The cuts, which were announced last month, will affect 5 percent of the company’s workforce in all countries where it operates.

 

The company notified the affected employees starting at 5:00 AM today through a memo sent by the Chief People Officer, Janelle Gale. Notifications will be made over several days across different regions, with the United States headquarters being the first.

The company plans to lay off more than 3,600 workers.

Why is Mark Zuckerberg laying off employees?

According to a memo shared in January by Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta, the company is developing some of the most advanced technologies in the world, such as artificial intelligence. For this reason, Zuckerberg decided to optimize performance management and streamline the process of firing underperforming employees to build the most talented team.

“Normally, we lay off people who don’t meet expectations over the course of a year, but now we’re going to make broader cuts based on performance during this cycle, with the intention of filling those positions in 2025,” he said in the memo.

Meta’s CEO stated that not all employees who fell short of expectations during the last period will be let go, as long as the company believes they have the potential to improve their performance in the future.

While these layoffs are taking place, the compay is also promoting specific hiring initiatives. According to Peng Fan, Vice President of Engineering for Monetization, the accelerated hiring process is aimed at machine learning engineers and other engineering roles critical to the company.

In an internal memo, he outlined that this process is scheduled to take place between February 11 and March 13 this year.

In which countries will Meta’s workforce be reduced?

The layoffs will affect not only the United States and its American offices but also employees in parts of Europe, Asia, and Africa, who will be notified over the next few weeks.

However, staff in Germany, France, Italy, and the Netherlands will not be part of this round of cuts due to current local regulations.

According to its latest quarterly report, the company currently has over 72,000 employees.

What will happen to the employees who are laid off at Meta?

Mark Zuckerberg assured that the employees affected by the layoffs will receive significant severance, following the terms the company has previously set.

These two sectors are stagnated in growth.

There are a lot of things at play here:

1. Covid time over hiring fluff ni vadulchukovatam

2. AI valla vachina productivity gains ni use cheskovatam

3. High interest rates valla companies are paying a lot more interest money on their debt there by reducing their profit margins. Companies are in turn doing cost cutting by firing employees to keep up their profit margins..

To make it even worse, there will a lot of Federal IT contractors and Federal IT full time employees that will be coming into the market soon because of all the DOGE clean up. All in all IT job market will be in a very tough situation for the next couple of years..

My guess 2025 and 2026 will be like this only with 2027,2028 hiring slowly picking up as interest rates gradually come down and natural attrition will make way for a few more people to join the IT work force.. I don't believe that AI will impact coding jobs may be QA and Analyst jobs but solid coders will remain relevant irrespective... People better stay put at their current jobs doesn't matter if you are FT/contractor, try to hang on to your current jobs..
