Spartan Posted February 13 Report Posted February 13 The breaking down of the main edifice will continue in phases to ensure minimum inconvenience to passengers and the running of trains, said South Central Railway (SCR) officials. “The area where the demolition work is taking place has been barricaded, but platform one will continue to be in use and trains will be running on the line for some more time till a few more trains are shifted to the new Cherlapalli terminal station next month,” informed Chief Public Relations Officer A. Sridhar, on Thursday. The plan is to take two platform demolitions in different phases for raising pillars for the new constructions. A new skywalk for metro connectivity is coming up and out of 66 foundations covering all platforms for the air concourse, about 34 foundations have been completed. About 10 more train pairs will be shifted to Cherlapalli station in addition to the already announced two express trains – one towards Chennai and another towards Gorakhpur already scheduled to start from the new terminal on March 7. Demolition work on the Bhoiguda side of the station had been done with the main ground plus three structures becoming visible. The main facade was first built in 1874 by the Nizam and later majorly renovated in 1950 when the railways joined the Indian Railways. It will soon have a new ground plus three building. The Secunderabad station is easily the iconic one for the zone with ₹500 crore in earnings and two crore passengers annually. It sees about 180 trains/1.5 lakh passengers a day and slowly eases a significant portion of the trains/passengers to Cherlapalli station which is seeing about 5,000 passengers currently. “The wide foot over bridge along the escalators and lifts towards the platforms should ease passengers movement. There are sufficient wheel chairs and more amenities will be added as the passenger flow increases,” added Mr. Sridhar. Quote
