Tellugodu Posted February 24 Report Posted February 24 Hindu tradition actually discourages the circumcision. Hindu tradition generally discourages circumcision because it is not part of the religious or cultural practices historically associated with Hinduism. Several reasons contribute to this stance: 1. **Religious Beliefs and Scriptures**: Hinduism emphasizes the sanctity and completeness of the human body as created by nature (or divine power). Altering the body through circumcision is seen by some as unnecessary because it implies that the body is incomplete or imperfect at birth. 2. **Ritual Purity Practices**: In Hinduism, concepts of ritual purity are maintained through practices like regular bathing, vegetarianism, and specific rites, rather than through physical modifications of the body. 3. **Lack of Scriptural Endorsement**: Unlike religions such as Judaism and Islam, where circumcision is a significant religious requirement, Hindu sacred texts (like the Vedas, Upanishads, or Dharmashastras) do not mention or prescribe circumcision as a religious duty or rite. 4. **Cultural Identity**: Historically, circumcision became associated with religious groups outside Hinduism, especially during periods of Islamic rule in India. As a result, avoiding circumcision also became a way for Hindus to maintain distinct religious and cultural identities. 5. **Philosophical Perspective**: Hindu philosophy often emphasizes non-violence (ahimsa) and respect for the body. From this perspective, performing a surgical procedure without medical necessity might be seen as inconsistent with these values. While Hindu tradition generally discourages circumcision for religious reasons, it does not prohibit it for medical reasons. In modern times, some Hindus may choose circumcision for health-related purposes, though it remains uncommon as a religious practice. PS: source- @ChatGPT Quote
