andhra_jp Posted March 5 Report Posted March 5 Who is Ranya Rao? The Kannada actress and IPS officer's daughter arrested for alleged gold smuggling Kannada actress Ranya Rao's arrest for alleged gold smuggling at Bengaluru airport has sparked controversy, with questions surrounding her potential involvement in a larger smuggling network. Kannada actress Ranya Rao, who has acted in several South Indian films, recently found herself embroiled in a controversy following her arrest at Kempegowda International Airport in Bengaluru. The 31-year-old actress was detained on March 3 for allegedly attempting to smuggle gold into the country, an offence that has now raised questions about her involvement in a larger smuggling network. Ranya's arrest has raised a number of eyebrows, especially given her ties to a DGP-rank senior Indian Police Service (IPS) officer as her stepfather in Karnataka. While her stepfather's involvement remains unclear, the actress’s connections have added another layer of intrigue to the case. The DRI's ongoing investigations will aim to uncover whether Ranya was working alone or whether she was part of a broader gold smuggling operation. Ranya Rao entered the world of acting after completing her engineering degree at Dayananda Sagar College of Engineering in Bangalore. Her love for cinema led her to pursue formal training at the Kishore Namit Kapoor Acting Institute, which helped her hone her craft. After completing her studies, she embarked on her acting career and made her debut in the Kannada film industry in 2014 with the film Maanikya. Directed by and starring the renowned actor Sudeep, Ranya played the role of Manasa, the love interest of Sudeep's character. Although the film received mixed reviews, Ranya’s performance marked the beginning of her career in the entertainment industry. In the years that followed, Ranya expanded her career to Tamil cinema. In 2016, she starred in the romantic drama Wagah, opposite actor Vikram Prabhu. The film showcased Ranya in a lead role, and though it did not make a significant impact at the box office, it helped solidify her position in the South Indian film industry. Ranya, who hails from Chikmagalur, Karnataka, had been under surveillance by the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) for some time, particularly due to her frequent trips to Dubai. Upon her arrival at the airport, the DRI intercepted her and seized a total of 14.8 kg of gold concealed in her clothing and hidden within her attire. Some of the gold was even worn on her person in an apparent attempt to evade detection. Authorities quickly took Ranya into custody, and she was remanded to judicial custody for 14 days while investigations continue Ranya returned to Kannada cinema in 2017 with the comedy film Pataki, where she played Sangeetha, a journalist who becomes the love interest of the lead character played by actor Ganesh. Pataki was generally well-received for its humour and performances, and Ranya’s portrayal of Sangeetha was noted as one of the better aspects of the film. However, despite her consistent efforts, she has not been able to secure a major breakout role in the industry, and her career trajectory had yet to reach its full potential. The recent incident at Bengaluru airport, however, has overshadowed her film career, putting her in the spotlight for reasons entirely unrelated to her acting talent. The arrest has raised significant questions about how actors and public figures might be involved in illicit activities, and whether their professional lives are truly separate from their personal decisions. Ranya's arrest comes at a time when gold smuggling has become a significant issue in India, with authorities tightening their grip on individuals attempting to bypass customs and import duties. The DRI’s focus on intercepting such illegal activities has led to several high-profile arrests, and Ranya’s case has now become one of the most talked-about incidents in recent times. While the actress has yet to comment publicly on her arrest, the ongoing investigation is sure to bring more details to light. Whether Ranya acted alone or as part of a larger network remains to be seen, but this case is undoubtedly one that will be followed closely by both the public and authorities in the coming weeks. The film industry, too, will likely be watching closely, as the controversy could have significant ramifications for Ranya’s career, especially given the sudden and unexpected turn her life has taken. In the meantime, Ranya's career in the entertainment industry hangs in the balance. While she was once a rising star in Kannada and Tamil cinema, this arrest could very well alter the trajectory of her professional life, with the public eye now firmly focused on the unfolding investigations and the potential consequences of her alleged involvement in gold smuggling. andhra_jp Posted March 5 Author Report Posted March 5 Ranya Rao smuggling case: DRI raids actor's Bengaluru home, seizes Rs 4.73 cr in cash, jewellery The DRI officers stopped her after she landed in Bengaluru on an Emirates flight. Upon examination, they found gold bars weighing 14.2 kg ingeniously concealed on her body. The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) has recovered gold jewellery worth Rs 2.06 crore and Rs 2.67 crore in cash from the residence of Kannada actor Ranya Rao in Bengaluru on Wednesday. The raid was carried after the actor was arrested under the Customs Act, 1962, for smuggling 14.2 kg of gold worth Rs 12.56 crore through Kempegowda International Airport. Ranya Rao, stepdaughter of a senior Karnataka IPS officer of Director General of Police (DGP) rank, was intercepted at the airport while returning from Dubai on March 3. The DRI officers stopped her after she landed in Bengaluru on an Emirates flight. Upon examination, they found gold bars weighing 14.2 kg ingeniously concealed on her body. The actor was produced before a magistrate on Tuesday and remanded to 14-day judicial custody. Officials suspect she is part of a smuggling syndicate operating through Bengaluru airport in recent months. With a total seizure of Rs 17.29 crore, The DRI declared it to be one of the biggest gold smuggling cases at Bengaluru airport. According to sources quoted by TOI, Ranya had been under DRI surveillance due to her frequent international travel, having reportedly made over 10 trips this year. “Officials became suspicious after noticing her multiple short-duration visits to the Gulf,” said an officer stationed at Kempegowda International Airport. Following this, a DRI team was dispatched to question her on Monday. However, upon landing at the airport, Ranya tried to escape security checks with the help of police constable Basavaraju, who accompanied her. However, the DRI, who had a heads-up about her activities, caught her red-handed with the gold consignment. “She looked extremely confident as she disembarked, showing no signs of nervousness. But when searched, officers were shocked to find gold bars cleverly concealed in a belt,” a source told TOI. DRI is now reviewing CCTV footage of her previous arrivals to ascertain whether she had smuggled gold on earlier occasions. Quote

Kannada actor Ranya Rao, who was arrested in a gold smuggling case on March 3, took at least 26 round trips to Dubai with actor friend Tarun Raju during which they smuggled gold, Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) officials told the court on Tuesday. According to the DRI, Rao and Raju would leave in the morning and return by the evening, a pattern that raised suspicion during their 26 round trips to Dubai between 2023 and March 2025. The authorities have even found that Rao travelled to Dubai 52 times between 2023 and 2025, with 45 of them being a single-day round trip. In the first two months of 2025, she made 27 visits, often passing through Bengaluru, Goa, and Mumbai. Her solo one-day trips on 45 occasions raised strong suspicions of her involvement in a smuggling syndicate. Multiple business ventures In 2023, the Kannada actor established Vira Diamonds Trading in Dubai, allegedly as a cover for her illegal activities. Tarun Raju, an actor and businessman, was reportedly her partner in this venture. Additionally, in 2022, she founded Bio Enho India in Bengaluru, which was later rebranded as Xiroda India. The rapid expansion of her business ventures has raised further suspicions regarding her financial dealings. The officials are now examining her financial records, suspecting that funds deposited into her accounts were redirected to unknown sources connected to gold smuggling. Investigators believe that Rao's businesses may have been used to launder illegally acquired wealth. Who is Tarun Raju? Tarun Raju, also known as Virat Konduru, is a businessman and actor who has become a central figure in the Enforcement Directorate’s investigation into gold smuggling. According to the officials, the actor played a role in purchasing gold in Dubai and facilitated hawala transactions to fund the smuggling operations. Raju has already been arrested and named the second accused in the case. He has been in judicial custody for 15 days as authorities continue investigating his financial activities and business dealings. Raju has applied for bail, with a hearing on the matter taking place on Tuesday. Quote
