Ranya Rao smuggling case: DRI raids actor's Bengaluru home, seizes Rs 4.73 cr in cash, jewellery

The DRI officers stopped her after she landed in Bengaluru on an Emirates flight. Upon examination, they found gold bars weighing 14.2 kg ingeniously concealed on her body.

The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) has recovered gold jewellery worth Rs 2.06 crore and Rs 2.67 crore in cash from the residence of Kannada actor Ranya Rao in Bengaluru on Wednesday. The raid was carried after the actor was arrested under the Customs Act, 1962, for smuggling 14.2 kg of gold worth Rs 12.56 crore through Kempegowda International Airport.

Ranya Rao, stepdaughter of a senior Karnataka IPS officer of Director General of Police (DGP) rank, was intercepted at the airport while returning from Dubai on March 3. The DRI officers stopped her after she landed in Bengaluru on an Emirates flight. Upon examination, they found gold bars weighing 14.2 kg ingeniously concealed on her body.

The actor was produced before a magistrate on Tuesday and remanded to 14-day judicial custody. Officials suspect she is part of a smuggling syndicate operating through Bengaluru airport in recent months. With a total seizure of Rs 17.29 crore, The DRI declared it to be one of the biggest gold smuggling cases at Bengaluru airport.

According to sources quoted by TOI, Ranya had been under DRI surveillance due to her frequent international travel, having reportedly made over 10 trips this year. “Officials became suspicious after noticing her multiple short-duration visits to the Gulf,” said an officer stationed at Kempegowda International Airport.

Following this, a DRI team was dispatched to question her on Monday. However, upon landing at the airport, Ranya tried to escape security checks with the help of police constable Basavaraju, who accompanied her. However, the DRI, who had a heads-up about her activities, caught her red-handed with the gold consignment.

“She looked extremely confident as she disembarked, showing no signs of nervousness. But when searched, officers were shocked to find gold bars cleverly concealed in a belt,” a source told TOI.

DRI is now reviewing CCTV footage of her previous arrivals to ascertain whether she had smuggled gold on earlier occasions.

This is not new thing.. this was happening from last 60 years.. most of IPS and Judiciary bureaucracy are corrupted.  The typically send their sub ordinates to accompany them to bypass the standard protocols... with in recent years especially 4-5 years the smuggling went to peaks. The smugglers are targeting kids of these bureaucrats by throwing big parties or drugs or alcohol or honey traps later using them as mules for their work.

Kannada actress Ranya Rao, who was recently arrested for allegedly smuggling 14.2 kg of gold, was crying in the courtroom on Friday and told her lawyers that she cannot sleep and was having mental trauma.

When brought in the court by the security officials, her face was having dark circles around her eyes.

 

While talking to her lawyers, she broke down and said: “I keep thinking why did I get into it. My mind keeps going back to the day at the airport. I cannot sleep…I am having mental trauma,” reported The Indian Express.

 

The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) has told the special court that Rao was part of a gold smuggling syndicate.

The DRI requested the court for Rao’s custodial interrogation to confront her with forensic extracts from her mobile phone and laptops.

 

The court said that the DRI was justified in its claim and “also to investigate regarding the involvement of a syndicate and misuse of protocols”.

Kannada actor Ranya Rao, who was arrested in a gold smuggling case on March 3, took at least 26 round trips to Dubai with actor friend Tarun Raju during which they smuggled gold, Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) officials told the court on Tuesday.

According to the DRI, Rao and Raju would leave in the morning and return by the evening, a pattern that raised suspicion during their 26 round trips to Dubai between 2023 and March 2025.

The authorities have even found that Rao travelled to Dubai 52 times between 2023 and 2025, with 45 of them being a single-day round trip. In the first two months of 2025, she made 27 visits, often passing through Bengaluru, Goa, and Mumbai. Her solo one-day trips on 45 occasions raised strong suspicions of her involvement in a smuggling syndicate.

Multiple business ventures

In 2023, the Kannada actor established Vira Diamonds Trading in Dubai, allegedly as a cover for her illegal activities. Tarun Raju, an actor and businessman, was reportedly her partner in this venture.

Additionally, in 2022, she founded Bio Enho India in Bengaluru, which was later rebranded as Xiroda India. The rapid expansion of her business ventures has raised further suspicions regarding her financial dealings. The officials are now examining her financial records, suspecting that funds deposited into her accounts were redirected to unknown sources connected to gold smuggling. Investigators believe that Rao's businesses may have been used to launder illegally acquired wealth.

Who is Tarun Raju?

Tarun Raju, also known as Virat Konduru, is a businessman and actor who has become a central figure in the Enforcement Directorate’s investigation into gold smuggling. According to the officials, the actor played a role in purchasing gold in Dubai and facilitated hawala transactions to fund the smuggling operations.

Raju has already been arrested and named the second accused in the case. He has been in judicial custody for 15 days as authorities continue investigating his financial activities and business dealings. Raju has applied for bail, with a hearing on the matter taking place on Tuesday.

Hyd is true. Dubai flight ante customs vallu ekkestharu. In 2021 I bought one big kadi in Dubai and two rings all 24k. I was confident that they won't catch me ( machine sound cheyyadhu 24k ki), full hand shirt tho manage cheddaniki tried but vaadu chethulatho pisiki pattesadu.  I had to shell out 30k INR for them to let me go veltha unte pilichi oka bottle konipincharu duty free lo.
