andhra_jp Posted July 17 Author Report Posted July 17 Gold smuggling case: Kannada actress Ranya Rao gets 1 year jail term The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) had seized from her gold bars weighing 14.2kg, valued at Rs 12.56 crore. Kannada actress Ranya Rao was on Thursday sentenced to one year imprisonment in the Rs 12 crore gold smuggling case. She was arrested in March from Kempegowda International Airport upon her arrival from Dubai. The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) had seized from Harshavardini Ranya alias Ranya Rao gold bars weighing 14.2kg, valued at Rs 12.56 crore. The Advisory Board under the Conservation of Foreign Exchange and Prevention of Smuggling Activities Act (COFEPOSA) has sentenced her to one year of imprisonment, a Times of India reported said. The actress was granted bail in May after DRI failed to file a chargesheet within the legally prescribed period. Ranya, however, continued to remain in custody under COFEPOSA provisions. COFEPOSA is a preventive detention law aimed at curbing smuggling and preserving foreign exchange reserves. It allows for individuals to be held without trial for up to a year based on suspicion of involvement in such offences. The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has attached Ranya's assets worth over Rs 34 crore as part of a money-laundering investigation. It alleged that the actor orchestrated a "well-structured" operation with her associates for smuggling gold into India. The federal probe agency said a provisional order was issued under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) to attach Ranya's house in Victoria Layout and a plot located in Arkavathi Layout in Bengaluru, an industrial land in Tumkur and an agricultural land in Anekal taluk. These assets have a combined fair market value of Rs 34.12 crore, it said. Quote
