Shivaji arranged for Brahmins from Kashi to conduct his coronation ceremony on June 6, 1674, despite some Brahmins initially considering him a "Shudra". He was crowned as the king despite some opposition from local Brahmins, and his reign was marked by caste amity and communal harmony.

  • Brahmins' Initial Perception:
Some Brahmins initially considered Shivaji to be a "Shudra" (a lower caste) and questioned his Kshatriya lineage, which was considered necessary for a ruler.

India had many great kings in the past, Political parties just choose and glorify the kings/leaders which fits their narrative

India had many emperors and kings outside of Kshatriyas from times immemorial.

Isn't Ashoka a non Kshatriya too? as Chandragupta Maurya is himself a commoner raising cattle.

Shri Krishna as a ruler was himself a cattle rearer. The Vijayanagara emperors too.

The Britishers to whom high moral ground is generally assigned were doing slave trade and bonded labor in plantations based on skin color.

Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj formally ascended the throne on June 6, 1674, at Raigad Fort, where he was crowned as the first Chhatrapati (king) of the Maratha Empire. His journey to kingship was marked by years of military campaigns, strategic diplomacy, and resistance against the Mughal and Adil Shahi rulers.

How Shivaji Gained His Throne:

1. Early Expansion and Guerrilla Warfare (1645–1660s)

Shivaji began his military campaigns in his teens, capturing forts like Torna, Purandar, and Rajgad from the Adil Shahi Sultanate.

He employed guerrilla tactics to outmaneuver powerful Mughal and Deccan forces.

2. Clash with the Mughals (1659–1665)

Defeated Adil Shah’s general Afzal Khan in 1659.

Successfully resisted Mughal advances but was forced into the Treaty of Purandar (1665) with Aurangzeb, temporarily losing some forts.

3. Escape from Agra and Rebuilding (1666–1670)

In 1666, Aurangzeb invited Shivaji to Agra and tried to imprison him, but Shivaji escaped cleverly.

Upon return, he reorganized his army and resumed his conquests.

4. Reconquest and Establishment of an Empire (1670–1674)

Between 1670 and 1674, he recaptured several forts lost in earlier treaties and expanded his influence across the Deccan.

Established a strong naval force along the Konkan coast.

5. Coronation at Raigad (June 6, 1674)

Shivaji was formally crowned Chhatrapati at Raigad Fort in a grand Hindu ceremony conducted by Pandit Gaga Bhatt from Varanasi.

Declared himself an independent sovereign from the Mughal and Deccan Sultanates, laying the foundation of the Maratha Empire.

His coronation was significant because it legitimized his rule as a Hindu king in a predominantly Muslim-ruled subcontinent. It also provided political and religious authority to his reign, allowing him to expand the Maratha influence further.

Pandit Gaga Bhatt initially raised objections regarding Shivaji Maharaj’s Kshatriya status. Since Shivaji belonged to the Bhonsle clan, which was not widely recognized as a traditional Kshatriya lineage in northern India, some Brahmin scholars questioned whether he was eligible for the Vedic coronation rites. This issue was significant because, according to Hindu traditions, only a Kshatriya could undergo the Rajyabhishek (coronation) with full Vedic rituals.

To resolve this, historical accounts suggest that Shivaji provided genealogical records and undertook a purification ceremony (Shuddhikaran) to formally establish his Kshatriya status. Gaga Bhatt, after reviewing the evidence and being convinced of Shivaji’s ancestry, ultimately endorsed his Kshatriya status and performed the coronation rituals on June 6, 1674, at Raigad Fort.
