Government research is already in place….and every decade, their access to public funds have been getting better. But that’s not enough.

As we speak, Is it more than 1 lakh crore though?

Okay. So when ever govt says one lakh crore, it means maximum of one lakh crore over a period if time to be released annually….say if the annual cap is 10k, the said fund will be utilized over the next 10 years. Funding for such programs will be from CSR funds or cess or financing.

Now coming to one lakh crore, no. PSU’s don’t get one lakh crore for their research but then again no one gets one lakh crore in the first place.

Okay. On Contrary, here is the situation of academic research in India.

On July 23, 2024, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman in the Union Budget announced a major overhaul of funding allocations for higher education. The budget for the University Grants Commission was drastically reduced from rs6,809 crore to Rs2,900 crore, signalling a paradigm shift that may lead to the establishment of the Higher Education Commission of India (HECI), as envisioned in the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.
