Traveling back to the US turned into a nightmare for an Indian student on OPT. His F-1 visa was canceled at Abu Dhabi pre-clearance, leaving him stranded in India and separated from his wife.

In a social media post, he claimed the CBP officers told him he lacked sufficient proof of employment. Meanwhile, his wife was cleared to travel, forcing him to visit the US embassy and give the interview again.

Further explaining his ordeal, the man wrote, “They analyzed I have insufficient proof of my work that I was doing, though I had all the supporting documents like EAD, job offer letter, vacation approval letter, valid i-20. They withdrew my visa and put cancelled on visa stamp. I still have active I-20 and SEVIS.”

Many pointed out that long wait times in India could ruin his OPT status. And even if he gets the interview his visa getting “canceled” and not “canceled without prejudice” could threaten his future approvals.

The Indian OPT worker revealed that his company is filing for an H-1B now, but this rejection has made him unsure about his chances. If the F-1 visa gets denied, waiting for H-1B processing could take months.

This has proven that Indians cannot rest assured at any stage, even if they get their visas. A minor trouble or a layover during a flight can destroy years of effort in minutes.
