GROK: who opposed Indian national flag - tricolor

The opposition to the Indian national flag, known as the Tricolour, primarily came from the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), a Hindu nationalist organization, during the period leading up to and following India's independence in 1947. The RSS expressed reservations about the Tricolour, which was adopted by the Constituent Assembly on July 22, 1947, as it symbolized a secular India. They favored the saffron flag (Bhagwa Dhwaj), which they viewed as a representation of Hindu culture and heritage, aligning with their vision of a Hindu Rashtra (nation).

The RSS's mouthpiece, Organiser, in its issues around July 1947, criticized the Tricolour, with statements suggesting that it would "never be respected and owned by the Hindus" due to its three colors, which they deemed inauspicious. M.S. Golwalkar, the second head of the RSS, also voiced opposition in his book Bunch of Thoughts, questioning the choice of the Tricolour over a saffron alternative. This stance persisted until 1949, when the RSS agreed to respect the national flag as a condition for the release of its leaders from jail following Mahatma Gandhi’s assassination and the subsequent ban on the organization.

Additionally, some historical narratives suggest that the Hindu Mahasabha, another Hindu nationalist group led by figures like V.D. Savarkar, also expressed dissent toward the Tricolour around the time of independence, though their opposition was less sustained than that of the RSS. The Muslim League, during the pre-independence period, had also opposed a single flag for India, advocating instead for a separate flag for Pakistan, reflecting their demand for partition rather than a direct rejection of the Tricolour’s design post-1947.

While these groups opposed the flag ideologically, the Tricolour was widely accepted by the Indian National Congress and the broader independence movement as a symbol of unity and secularism, and it remains a potent emblem of national identity today.
