In a simple language : This change affects OPT (Optional Practical Training) students who are transitioning from F-1 status to H-1B status through the H-1B cap-gap extension. Here’s what it means: Extended Work Authorization – Previously, the automatic extension of F-1 status and OPT work authorization ended on October 1. Now, it extends until April 1 of the following fiscal year or until the H-1B petition’s start date, whichever comes first. More Stability for OPT Students – This gives students six additional months of work authorization while waiting for their H-1B approval, reducing employment gaps. Better Alignment with H-1B Processing Delays – Since H-1B processing can sometimes be delayed, this rule ensures students are not left in legal limbo between October and April. In short, this benefits F-1 students on OPT/STEM OPT who have pending H-1B petitions, allowing them to work longer under the cap-gap extension. Quote
