A modernised Tirupati railway station, with an advanced look and expanded space, will be open to the public within a couple of months. Though the target seems quite ambitious, workers are slogging it round the clock to reach the deadline.

After much delay, the redevelopment project was taken up with a whopping ₹300 crore last year. The project started with the initial proposal to go vertical with G+3 floors, with a plan to expand to 10 more floors in the second phase.

With over 40,000 passengers using the station premises on a daily basis, and projected to be double in the next four decades, the redevelopment project aims at bringing the most modern amenities to the reach of the commuters. With the old entrance on the north becoming a huge bottleneck for the visiting devotee population, the Indian Railways is developing the southern side with a new building, the face of which represents Dravidian style.

A new road is also being developed on the southern side, which will connect the D.R. Mahal Road on the east of the station and Rayala Cheruvu Road on the west. This will provide the much-needed connectivity on the southern side of the city, thus preventing the need for passengers to take the already-crammed northern exit.

“With 20 lifts and 22 escalators coming up, Tirupati will become one of the major railway destinations in the country to offer such modern amenities to the passengers,” Tirupati railway station Director K. Satyanarayana told the media on Tuesday.

The railway platform extension has already been completed and is now open for the public. The offices of the Railway Protection Force (RPF) and General Railway Police (GRP) will be accommodated on the ground floor in close proximity to the platforms to enable easy access to passengers. Station Master K. Chinna Reddeppa and the construction agency supervisors accompanied Mr. Satyanarayana in the station tour.
