We are reaching out to you at a profoundly important moment in the 48-year journey of the Telugu Association of North America (TANA). As your elected leadership, we feel a deep responsibility to be transparent about the serious challenges we are facing and to share the actions being taken to protect and strengthen the future of this beloved organization. For nearly five decades, TANA has served as a cornerstone for Telugu culture, language, service, and unity across North America. It is this proud legacy that guides us as we face the most complex and difficult period in our history. Over the past several months, TANA has been confronted with multiple, compounding challenges: • The loss of approximately $3.6 million due to unauthorized financial transfers, • The receipt of a grand jury subpoena, which is currently in the early stages, • A government-mandated audit and compliance review, • Discrepancies in past tax filings (which did not account for the stolen funds), now requiring correction and refiling with the IRS, • Concerns related to the management of gifts and corporate donations, • And ongoing lawsuits aimed at halting or canceling the upcoming 2025 Conference—one of TANA’s most important cultural and community milestones. These developments have placed immense pressure on the organization and demanded that all available resources be urgently redirected towards legal, financial, and operational stabilization. As a result, several regular functions have been impacted—including the election process. We want to acknowledge and honor the genuine concerns many members have raised. Your calls for greater transparency, accountability, and decisive action reflect your deep commitment to TANA’s mission—and we are listening. These are not easy times, but they are moments that require responsibility, unity, and resolve. Given the current environment, the Board has made the difficult but necessary decision to suspend ballot-based elections for this cycle. Holding elections under such strained and uncertain conditions could lead to further division, distraction from recovery efforts, and a process that does not reflect the fairness and inclusivity we strive for. Let us be absolutely clear: this is not an attempt to restrict participation or silence members. Rather, it is a provisional measure taken in good faith to safeguard the integrity of the organization and ensure that future elections can be conducted meaningfully with balloting. To move forward, the Board has taken the following actions: • Defer balloting for the current cycle, • Initiated a full review of internal policies, financial controls, and governance structures, • Form a Nominations and Elections Committee tasked with developing a merit-based process focused on stability, experience, and ethical leadership. Our commitment to democratic governance, cultural preservation, and community service remains steadfast. As soon as circumstances improve, we will resume member participation with renewed strength and structure. TANA’s nearly 50-year history is a testament to the resilience and unity of our Telugu community. With your continued trust, understanding, and involvement, we are confident that TANA will overcome this period of difficulty and emerge stronger, more transparent, and more committed than ever to its mission.
