We have this (South florida). we got this accidentally. Exactly 2 years ago in a COUNTY arranged event of Rare exotic plants , we bought this anticipating fruits.. but it ended up only flower type. the event happened this year last weekend, this time we got fruit bearing plant. 

Coming to your post - Caterpillar problem YES, i dont think you get this just for aesthetics. why don't you look for bougainvillea ?

adi telvake... $50 and 2 Years time waste. There are some reddit articles some has same issue NO fruits.. some say the needs to be paired with another plant (basically you need 2 plants at home)..

we knew these passion fruits from childhood but never knew actual english name until i came here.

good for florida..but not so good for north east...
