AI Toronto-Delhi flight diverted as 5 toilets clogged

An Air India flight from Toronto to Delhi was diverted to Frankfurt around six hours through its journey after several lavatories aboard the Boeing 777 aircraft were clogged, said people aware of the matter, in what is the second such incident in less than two months on a flight operated by the airlin

The incident took place on May 2. Flight AI 188, a Boeing 777 aircraft, took off from Frankfurt and resumed its journey to Delhi a “couple of hours” later, once the washrooms were made available.

 

An official aware of the matter said, “The flight had to be diverted to Frankfurt as at least five washrooms were clogged.” A Boeing 777 typically has 12 washrooms.

 

The airline, in a statement issued on Monday, confirmed the diversion and attributed it to a “technical issue”.

 

“Air India flight AI188 of 02 May 2025, operating non-stop from Toronto to Delhi, was diverted to Frankfurt due to a technical issue. The flight was airborne from Frankfurt within a couple of hours and proceeded to its destination, Delhi. We would like to reiterate that at Air India, the safety and well-being of our customers and crew remain top priority,” an Air India spokesperson said

Last Wednesday, after lifting off from O'Hare, the Air India flight crew found eight of the 12 toilets had been stuffed with clothing, rags and plastic bags, and the bathrooms wouldn't work.

"One person couldn't have done that," said aviation expert Joe Schwieterman, a transportation professor at DePaul University in Chicago. "It looks like a concerted, relatively sophisticated decision to, you know, essentially board a flight with some sort of internal sabotage. I've been looking at aviation for a long time, and this is pretty unprecedented stuff here."

On Tuesday Schwieterman told NBC Chicago that with no claim of responsibility, it's not likely to be the handiwork of a terrorist organization but is a problem.

This is an intentional sabotage attempt. Air India can take away significant monies from Middle Eastern Airways. They're already modernizing the fleet.

If that's true, why is it happening only on outbound flights to India? India nunchi depart ayye flights lo kuda jargali ga similar incidents?

and why is it happening only on Air India flights? our desi people travel on almost all airlines...ani @CanadianMalodu asking.

Possible. But somehow I think it has more to do with ME airlines hit job. Most of the Desis more so with F,H,B and L class use ME airlines. By and large their these guys form the major chunk of their economy and some decent portion of Business class.  I haven't seen same volumes in Delta and United as I have seen in ME Airlines.
