Hi everyone,
I’m reaching out for advice and support after a terrifying incident with my 2023 Tesla (purchased 12/31/2023, 20,000 miles). Yesterday, my wife was driving home after picking up our 7-year-old daughter from school. She felt the vehicle slightly veer off the road but quickly regained control and got back on the highway. Another driver flagged her down, warning her about flames underneath the car. Thank God, she and my daughter got out safely and called 911. The police and firefighters arrived promptly but couldn’t extinguish the fire, and the car was totaled.
We’re shaken but grateful everyone is safe. Now, I’m trying to understand what’s next regarding Tesla’s warranty and potential replacement. The car is well within the 8-year/120,000-mile Battery and Drive Unit Limited Warranty (for Long Range/Performance Model 3 or AWD Model Y) or 8-year/100,000-mile warranty (for RWD Model 3/Y). I’ve read that Tesla’s warranty covers damage from a battery fire, even if caused by driver error, but not if the car was already totaled before the fire. In this case, the fire started after my wife regained control, with no prior collision or damage reported.
Has anyone experienced a similar situation? Will Tesla honor the battery warranty and provide a replacement vehicle, or is this handled through insurance since the car is totaled? Any insights on navigating this with Tesla’s support or what to expect would be greatly appreciated. I’m also curious if spontaneous fires like this are covered under warranty or if there’s a specific process I need to follow.
Thanks in advance for any help or shared experiences!
