External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Monday told a parliamentary panel that India informed Pakistan after the Indian Armed Forces struck nine terror bases in Pakistan and Pakistan Occupied Kashmir on May 7, it is learnt.

The remarks by Jaishankar gain significance as Lok Sabha Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi has been targeting the minister for “informing Pakistan at the start of India’s attack” and has called it a “crime”.

Speaking to reporters on May 15, Jaishankar had said, “At the start of the operation, we had sent a message to Pakistan saying we are striking at terrorists’ infrastructure. We are not striking at the military. So the military has an option of standing out and not interfering in this process. They chose not to take that good advice.”

The statement was picked up by Gandhi and the Congress, which attacked the EAM and his foreign policy decisions regarding the ongoing conflict with Pakistan.

The Ministry of External Affairs also issued a statement on Saturday evening and said facts were being misrepresented.

"The External Affairs Minister had stated that we had warned Pakistan at the start, which is clearly the early phase after Op Sindoor's commencement. This is being falsely represented as being before the commencement. This utter misrepresentation of facts is being called out," the ministry said.

The ministry also pointed to a briefing in which Director General of Military Operations Rajiv Ghai had said India had attempted to communicate with Pakistan "in the wake of" Operation Sindoor. 

"Even though we did attempt to reach out and communicate our compulsion to strike at the heart of terror to my counterpart, in the immediate wake of Operation Sindoor, the request was brusquely turned down, with an intimation that a severe response was inevitable and in the offing. We were, of course, prepared," Lieutenant General Ghai had said.
