Except that the "Nehar" reference comes from Delhi not from Srinagar, Kashmir. There is no Neharwad area. His biography states their family moved to Delhi region during the reign of Farrukhsiyar.

His autobiography (Meri Kahani)states pretty much the same at least from the translated sources. I haven't read the urdu one. 

Gangadhar Nehru was the Kotwal of Delhi in 1857, during Sepoy Mutiny. Kotwal was the equivalent of Police Commissioner in Mughal Administration. Delhi then was ruled by Bahadur Shah Jafar. Tell me, how was a non Mughal, Hindu was appointed as a Delhi's Kotwal? 

Why was he the only Hindu? Or, was I wrong? Give me another Hindu Delhi kothwal's name. 

Even modern day democratically elected governments don't appoint non community and caste guys to such top positions.
