The system was formalized under Mughal and Nizam rule and continued with modifications during British colonial influence. • Patel: The Patel was typically the village headman, responsible for law and order, revenue collection, and general administration. There were often two types: • Police Patel: Oversaw law and order, reported births, deaths, disputes, and other village activities to higher authorities (e.g., via the “Rojunancha” report submitted to the police). • Mali Patel: Focused on revenue collection and assisting the Patwari. • The Patel could belong to any caste, though some sources suggest they were often from dominant or upper castes. • Patwari: The Patwari was the village accountant or land record keeper, responsible for maintaining detailed land records, including ownership, crop details, and revenue assessments.
