Reliance dumps Asian Paints as new brands cut in

Aside from losing market share, the paint brand also faces antitrust allegations

Asian Paints is putting in all of this extra work because it is struggling to hold onto its market share, which fell to 52% at the end of FY25, down from 59% a year prior, per a Reuters report citing Elara Securities data. In comparison, since its launch in February 2024, market share of the new entrant Birla Opus, which is owned by Grasim Industries, has reached 6.8%, the report added.

Analysts were already bearish, with more than half who track Asian Paints issuing a “sell” call for the company’s stock ahead of its latest quarterly earnings call in May. Then, Reliance Industries said on Friday that it had sold a 3.6% stake in Asian Paints for Rs 7,704 crore. The conglomerate made the sale to SBI Mutual Fund in a block deal through its affiliate, Siddhant Commercials, after holding onto the shares for 17 years.
