State Road Transport Corporation (APSRTC) Employees’ Union, in its 74-year journey, has not only secured several rights and welfare measures for RTC workers but also played a key role in the historic merger of the corporation with the State government, said Andhra Pradesh JAC Amaravati Chairman Bopparaju Venkateswarlu. Speaking at an event marking the union’s 74th anniversary on Friday, Mr. Venkateswarlu recalled the long-standing efforts for the merger, pursued since 1952 and finally realised in 2020. While the merger was a milestone, he said it initially led to the suspension of several benefits, including incentives and compassionate appointments. These issues were later resolved through a 92-day agitation jointly led by AP JAC Amaravati and the Employees’ Union during the previous government’s tenure. Mr. Venkateswarlu informed that a representation was recently submitted to M. Ravi Chandra, Secretary to the Chief Minister, seeking redressal of the pending issues. He reaffirmed the AP JAC’s full support for the cause of the Public Transport Department employees. He appreciated the government for ensuring timely disbursal of salaries and pensions but highlighted employee concerns over pending dues, the long-overdue 12th Pay Revision Commission, and the absence of Interim Relief, which he said were leading to growing dissatisfaction among the workforce. A.P. Public Transport Department (APPTD) Employees’ Union State president P. Damodar Rao urged the government to clear long-pending promotions held up for over six years. Pointing out that nearly 25% of APSRTC buses had been leased to private operators, he demanded that the proposed induction of electric buses into the RTC fleet should be operated solely by RTC staff. He said successful implementation of the proposed free bus travel scheme for women would require immediate recruitment of 10,000 new employees and addition of 3,000 buses. He also pressed for the restoration of medical services through a referral hospital system, payment of pending gratuity and leave encashment for retired staff, and job security for outsourced workers. Representatives from various employees’ associations also participated in the event. Quote
