Employees union warns government against giving APSRTC land for shopping mall construction

Will launch State-wide agitations if the government did not stop the privatisation of the RTC asset, say leaders

APPTD employees’ union leaders submitting a memorandum to APSRTC Vice-Chairman and Managing Director Dwaraka Tirumala Rao, at the RTC House on Tuesday.

Leaders of Andhra Pradesh Public Transport Department (APPTD), the erstwhile APSRTC, employees union demanded that the government withdraw its plans to hand over the prime land of Governorpet Depot 2 and old bus stand located in the heart of the city for construction of a shopping mall.

In a memorandum submitted to the Vice-Chairman and Managing Director of APSRTC Ch. Dwaraka Tirumala Rao, the employees’ union State president P. Damodar Rao and general secretary G.V. Narasayya warned that the union would launch State-wide agitations if the government did not stop the privatisation of the RTC assets.

They said that efforts were on to hand over 19 depots in two phases to private bus operators under the pretext of introducing electric buses and demanded that the move be stopped immediately. When the coalition government came to power in the State, it raised our hopes that it would expand APSRTC services in line with the growing population, provide financial assistance for purchase of new buses, issue notifications to fill the thousands of vacant posts, clear pending dues to RTC employees and resolve the problems that had arisen from the merger of APSRTC into the government during the YSRCP rule, they added.

The union leaders said that they were not averse to development of the capital city, however, handing over RTC lands located in prime urban areas to private business entities was unacceptable. They said that the government was in talks with the RTC management to lease out around 3.70 acres of land at Governorpet Depot 2 and the old bus stand for construction of a shopping mall by the Lulu Group and it had plans to relocate the bus stand to Gollapudi, which was 10 km away. “These discussions must be stopped immediately,” they demanded.

They also insisted that the government should withdraw its plan to allocate 19 RTC depots in major cities to private electric bus operators in two phases. Recalling similar attempts to privatise Governorpet Depots 1 and 2 during its earlier tenure in 2017, they said the RTC training college near Gannavaram airport, spread across 29 acres and worth hundreds of crores, was handed over to a private IT company.

They said that the government should instead focus on strengthening the APSRTC by procuring more buses and augmenting its fleet.

25 ఏళ్లుగా ఒక రూపాయి ఆదాయం ఇవ్వని స్థలం, ప్రతి సంవత్సరం లీజ్ రూపంలో ఎంతో కొంత వస్తుంది

ఆ మాల్ వల్ల 1500-2000 మందికి డైరెక్ట్ ఎంప్లాయిమెంట్, 6-7000 మందికి ఇండైరెక్ట్ ఎంప్లాయిమెంట్ దొరుకుతుంది
