APSRTC officials have raised red flag. “We are not in favour of handing over this strategically significant property, currently valued at around Rs 300 crore. The alternative site in Gollapudi is not operationally feasible for us,” a senior official told TNIE on the condition of anonymity.

“Ironically, the proposed site is unsuitable for Lulu Group’s commercial operations due to its narrow shape with a canal on one side, and the busy Eluru Road on the other,” sources maintained.

Adding to the complexity, a portion of the depot was previously converted into a sculpture park using iron scrap by the Vijayawada Municipal Corporation. Sources indicate that this area could also be bundled into the proposed land allocation.

It may be recalled that the Governorpet-II RTC depot once served as the primary bus stand in Vijayawada before the construction of Pandit Nehru Bus Station (PNBS) in 1990 during the reign of the then Chief Minister NT Rama Rao.

If APIIC’s proposal materialises, the depot will be a thing of history, marking an end of the city’s landmarks.

"If the govt were to give away the Governor Pet bus depot land for LuLu Mall construction, the fate of around 1,000 RTC employees across the RTC depot and garage, including 200 women conductors, hangs in the balance. The govt says they will give alternate land in Gollapudi but didn't specify any particular area. Currently, the Governor Pet bus depot land is worth hundreds of crores as it is located in the centre of the city, whereas the govt doesn't possess any land nearby the highway in Gollapudi.

Also, the govt is not in a position to procure five acres of land in a prime location in Gollapudi and hand it over to RTC, so giving away the Governor Pet bus depot area to a private firm would be a big loss to the RTC," a senior RTC Employees Union leader told TOI, on condition of anonymity.

A CPM leader accused the govt of orchestrating a huge scam in the govt move. He said the govt is plotting to hand over the Governor Pet bus depot area, worth around 400 crore, to LuLu Mall.

Andhra Pradesh transport staff protest plan to hand over RTC land for mall in Vijayawada

Union leaders call the move a threat to public assets; demand that the proposed mall be shifted to Gollapudi instead of prime depot land

Members of the Andhra Pradesh Public Transport Department (APPTD) staged protests on Friday at the Governorpet 1 and 2 depots in Vijayawada, reiterating their demand that the State government drop its reported plan to hand over APSRTC land for the construction of a shopping mall. The protestors pointed out that the 3.07 acres of land, where the two depots are currently located in the heart of the city, are worth hundreds of crores of rupees.

Y. Srinivasa Rao, zonal secretary (Vijayawada zone-2) of the APPTD Employees Union, warned that if the government failed to reconsider the proposal, the union would be forced to intensify its agitation. Calling the decision “unfortunate,” he criticised the move to hand over such a valuable public asset to a private entity like the Lulu Group. He added that the APSRTC was reportedly being offered land at Gollapudi in exchange for parting with its Governorpet property, and suggested that the proposed mall should be built at Gollapudi instead.

Later, in a statement, the union’s state president P. Damodar Rao and general secretary G.V. Narasayya said the union would soon launch a statewide agitation to protect APSRTC properties. “We will meet by the end of this month to finalise a comprehensive protest programme,” they said.

Associations collectively voice opposition against proposed mall construction in APSRTC land

Resolution passed to stage a massive dharna at the Old Bus Stand, the proposed site for construction of the mall, on August 6 against government’s decision to hand over 4.5 acres of land to UAE-based Lulu Group

Representatives of various people’s organisations, political parties and voluntary bodies came together to collectively oppose the government’s decision to hand over 4.5 acres of land belonging to the Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (APSRTC) in the heart of Vijayawada city to UAE-based Lulu Group International for construction of a shopping mall.

At a roundtable organised by Vijayawada Poura Vedika (Vijayawada Citizens Forum) on Thursday, a resolution was passed to stage a massive dharna at the Old Bus Stand, the proposed site for construction of the mall, on August 6. The members also constituted an RTC Asset Protection Committee with the national working president of All-India Lawyers’ Union (AILU) S. Rajendra Prasad as its convenor and called for a broad, apolitical unity to protect RTC lands and ensure the survival of small and middle class traders in the surrounding areas.

Former Minister Vadde Shobhanadreeswara Rao took strong exception to the government selling public assets and said it was against the law. Calling for a united fight, he said that people cannot remain silent spectators when valuable RTC lands worth crores of rupees were being handed over, in Vijayawada and in Visakhapatnam, to the MNC at throwaway prices. He said that it was against the 2012 Land Allotment Act of united Andhra Pradesh, which mandates market value and transparency in land allocation.

Former Mayor Jandhyala Shankar said it was unfortunate that in its eagerness to usher in development, the TDP-led coalition government was losing sight of critical factors like environmental protection and public welfare. He said it would severely harm the interests of the urban residents.

Mr. Rajendra Prasad highlighted the need for a sustained legal, as well as people’s struggle, to protect the RTC lands, while the forum’s State convener Ch. Baburao called for a united agitation to scuttle the government plans in this regard. He urged all sections — intellectuals, civic leaders, RTC unions, civil society bodies and others to unite for the cause. He said while the market rate of the land was ₹200 per sq. ft on Bandar Road, the valuable RTC land was being given for an alarmingly low rate of ₹1.50 per sq. ft.

Andhra Pradesh Public Transport Department (APPTD) Employees Union State president P. Damodar the RTC unions were ready to make any sacrifice to protect the assets belonging to the Public Transport Department.

Representatives of various organisations like Jana Chaitanya Vedika, A.P. Chamber of Commerce, farmers’ associations, hotel owners’ association, pensioners’ association, tax-payers association and others attended the meeting and expressed solidarity for the cause of protecting APSRTC land.
