For eg bill gates, warren buffet do lot lot more charity than lets say ambani, adani. It is same at two income IT household also, americans do lot more charity and spend on themselves. Indians nuvvu annattu will save for pillalu, manavadalu, muni manavadalu. Another point is lot more american small business pass to non biological person ade mana india lo aiyte i have not seen good running business being given to anyone else other than son however boku than son might be. Even vacations are done differently by desis and amrikis .. We have a check list. We need to see all the places (vista points, attractions nearby). We kinda make it stressful. We get up early and go around till evening to complete checklist. You look at an amriki in a beach. Enjoy a beer, let children play in sand and they go to sleep. Or have a conversation. We cook food and carry there (Its OK for hygiene but not for cost). They eat whatever they can find. 2 Quote

It’s very hard to stay happy these days. It's easy. Dont try to be an amriki .. Make a list of what makes you happy and try to spend more time on that. For me regular workouts, hikes, Happy hour with friends, Dining once in a while with family, Cooking food for family, spending more time with parents (Remote work allowing that) and teaching kids. We make our life hard. We gotta learn to make it simple and easy. 2 Quote

It is never okay to not see all there is to the destination (again within our budget limits) .90% of vacations we come back more tired than to begin with . Quote

We stopped going on vacations with families that do that. I want our vacations to be relaxed and chill. If I get up early, then come back early and chill in the pool. 1 day where we do nothing. Local shopping, ice creams, souvenirs, going around, etc. The best vacation I had was in Switzerland. You don't have to sweat at all. Enjoy Alps via Train Journey. Just take a 3-day or a 5-day pass and Enjoy. Quote

Konebhar6 Posted July 29 Report Posted July 29 We need to move beyond the "Paisa Vasool" mindset when it comes to Vacations. Quote
Tyrannosauraus_Rex Posted July 29 Report Posted July 29 So many people have mentioned about the manner in which vacations are taken and I fully agree with that. My wife and I went to Italy for vacation a couple of years ago and we basically rested every alternate day. Just walked around the streets - or went to a nearby library, park etc., and the following day we just did the regular tourist thing. It was an amazing experience. We also go to vacations during non-season. When we were there at the Positano beach - we literally were the only people. This is the same beach that literally teems with thousands of people during summers. I have developed a very healthy dislike for crowds and crowded areas and that factors in a lot in our vacation planning. 1 Quote

Anna, not all folks cook, we try to eat whatever is available, kids ki kooda anthe, they will get used to it eventually you are right on chilling though, lot of parks lo you see non desis playing near creeks, some even reading books but I have a different perspective, you spend a lot to go there so why not try to see some of the beautiful places we can, of course agree that it should not be overwhelming and should be enjoyable, otherwise no point in stressing ourselves out, we start at 9-10 late after good breakfast and close shop by 6-7 and go to Dinner and relax, kind of keeps it ok and not too bad 1 Quote
Galactus Posted July 29 Report Posted July 29 I think this thread conflates happiness with content, both are different I believe irrespective of race, very few ppl are truly happy now when we talk about being content, this is where our upbringing comes into play, we are conditioned by our parents against complacency and being content so we are greedy in most aspects coming to job, money, house, car etc, this is primarily because a lot of folks grew up with out being in a well to do household in India and they are the first of their generation to afford a lot of these (If not all) so generally they will not be content parents encourage and put additional pressure on folks to be exceptional, you may laugh but I heard multiple stories recently where parents (60's,70's) still tell their kids (who are adults themselves in 30's,40's) to learn something/study AI or something etc, I know they are telling kids to better themselves but this is just an example of how parents except desi kids to be performing all through out life If you don't do well, there is no respect in Indian society bro, your whole social life is dependent on you running in the rat race 1 1 Quote

I have seen many friends who look up some one's house on Zillow, the moment they get their adress( simple invite for lunch, birthday, event etc). Then they decide how much respect should be given based on house value and where he/she works ( if not monetary, does the host at least have the same age kids as theirs , so that they get something from this friendship). 1 Quote

Luckily I haven’t come across such people who look at others homes, sounds too materialistic. However it’s very normal for people to look for other parents who have kids of same age. Happens in all cultures. It will be a problem if they only mingle with them. Quote
