***** Supreme Court pulls up PM 1st time in 60 years ****

Since almost the independence of India, the Supreme Court of India has never commented on the working of any Prime Minister. However, it broke the record yesterday, when it asked the Prime Minister why was there a delay in prosecuting 2G Scam accused minister Raja.

The Telecom Minister Raja has been accused of giving licenses of 2G Spectrum to companies that do not have eligibility and that too at extremely low prices. The opposition parties since last few days have been crying foul over inaction against the accused minister. Janata Party President Dr. Subramaniam Swamy, on November 29th, 2008, requested the PMO seeking sanction to prosecute Raja. However, there was no reply from the PMO till March 19, 2010!

A petition was filed on why the PMO didn't give any response. Supreme Court ordered the Solicitor General of India to file an affidavit in the case, on behalf of the PM’s Office. The SC wanted to know why there was complete silence from the PMO for all those months. The court also used strong words like "inaction" and "silence" refering them to PM's Office.

As a result of this note from the SC, there were reports that the Prime Minister would resign. However, the PMO has denied such rumors. It is now all up to the Prime Minister to defuse the situation and appease the opposition. He had tried to call them yesterday to a lunch settlement, but it seems the opposition is far from pleased.
