New York, Nov 18: Congress-led UPA Government is committed to protect religious freedom, but some state governments have imposed limits on them, according to a new report by the US State Department.

The International Religious Freedom Report, which was released yesterday, says some state and local governments, charged with upholding law and order, limited religious freedom by enforcing "anti-conversion" legislation and by not efficiently prosecuting those who attacked religious minorities.

"While there were no reports accusing the national government of committing abuses of religious freedom, human rights activists criticized it for alleged inaction regarding abuses committed by state and local authorities and private citizens," the report said.

"Despite the current national government's commitment to religious tolerance, communal violence has continued to occur with distrubing regualrity and the governmental response, particularly at the state and local levels have been largely inadequate," the report said.
