India Hopes To Seal Trade Pact With US By 'November Or So': Piyush Goyal .. Sallabadandi inka..

Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal voiced confidence that India and the United States could conclude a bilateral trade agreement (BTA) by November, despite recent strains in the relationship following Washington’s steep tariff measures.

“I do hope that things will get back on track soon and we will conclude a bilateral trade agreement by the fall, November or so, as was discussed by our two leaders in February," Piyush Goyal said in a virtual address to the Annual Global Investor Conference 2025 in Mumbai. He acknowledged that “a little bit of geopolitical issues overtook the trade matters in the negotiations," but added that both sides remain engaged.

Piyush Goyal also said India was focused on building resilience in supply chains and advancing self-reliance in key sectors such as auto and electronics, where export restrictions on critical inputs can create vulnerabilities.

“We are not at the mercy of any one geography who can actually hurt our industry in any significant manner," he said.

The minister added that volatile global conditions also bring opportunities, asserting, “It is a story of a half-full glass… Along with the private sector, the government is working to fortify ourselves for long-term capacity building."

Piyush Goyal also pointed to progress in other trade negotiations as India has signed agreements with Australia, the UAE, Mauritius, the UK and the EFTA bloc, while talks with the EU are entering a crucial phase.

India-US Tariff Tensions

India and the US have held five rounds of talks since March, aiming to more than double bilateral trade to $500 billion by 2030 from the current $191 billion. The Donald Trump administration has imposed a 50 per cent tariff on Indian goods- 25 per cent reciprocal duties and an additional 25 per cent- citing India’s purchase of Russian oil.

Donald Trump has accused New Delhi of “fueling Russia’s war effort" by buying discounted crude and reselling refined products while India has defended its energy policy as a matter of national interest, noting that other major economies- including the EU and China- remain among Moscow’s largest energy buyers.

 

US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent earlier sought to strike a more conciliatory note, telling Fox News that the two countries would eventually resolve their differences.

“At the end of the day, two great countries will get this solved. India is the most populous democracy in the world. Their values are much closer to ours and to China’s than to Russia’s," he said.
