The death of B.Ed student — V. Venkata Sai Manikanta — in Andhra University on Thursday (September 25), allegedly due to lack of proper medical facilities on the campus has sparked widespread controversy at the university on Friday (September 26).

A large number of students staged protests in front of Vice Chancellor chamber demanding his resignation, on Friday. This led the police to intervene, further leading to minor scuffle. The students, especially girls alleged that the police manhandled them.

As per the protesting students, Manikanta, a native of Vizianagaram, who was residing in Satavahana Hostel, collapsed in the hostel washroom on Thursday morning. His friends rushed him to the university dispensary, which subsequently referred him to King George Hospital (KGH).

While being transported in the university’s ambulance, Manikanta reportedly pleaded for oxygen, saying he was struggling to breathe. However, due to the unavailability of oxygen in the ambulance, he was allegedly denied the support. Upon arrival at KGH, doctors declared him brought dead after checking his pulse and ECG.

“If the dispensary had minimum facilities, or if the ambulance had oxygen, Manikanta might have survived,” said one of the protesting students.

Protests began on Thursday evening and intensified on Friday, with student unions and the student wing of the YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) calling for a bandh and a sit-in at the Administrative Block.

A large number of students gathered at the AU main gate and Administrative Block, demanding action against AU Vice Chancellor GC Raja Sekhar, while a few demanded his resignation. A minor scuffle reportedly broke out when students attempted to enter the Vice Chancellor’s chamber. Police forces were deployed to maintain order.

“Our demands are simple. Those responsible for the death of Manikanta should be suspended. The university dispensary must be upgraded with proper medical facilities and medical staff should be appointed and they should be available round-the-clock. As of now, only one doctor is available and he leaves after 5 p.m,” said a protestor.

Minister for IT Nara Lokesh spoke about the issue in the Assembly. He stated that Manikanta had reportedly suffered from fits and the university authorities attempted to help, but were unsuccessful.

“It is unfortunate that some student unions are politicising such tragic incidents and disrupting the classes for their personal gain. We are committed to resolve student issues,” he said, announcing constitution of an inquiry committee to investigate the incident thoroughly.
