Except few south states (mostly Telugu). Maradalu is considered cousin sister. Bottom line sister. 
When I was growing up in hyd. My close friend always introduced his mardal as cousin sister. Later they married.

There is no word for Cousin in Telugu. In English Cousin is not referred as brother or sister. Its just cousin.

And marrying first cousin in any tradition is not good. How does it matter if they are sister's kids or brother's kids, they all carry same blood/genes. Telugu folks made an exception for themselves and laugh at Muslims but they are doing same as bava mardal.
