It is more of a old tribal thing.. to keep blood line pure, keep assets within the family, fear of unknown, etc etc

Even Europeans used to do it.. konni old novels lo (like in hounds of Baskerville etc) the guys marry their cousin sister… I remember asking my English teacher why he married her sister.. 

but at least in South Indians, we don’t marry cousin sisters (chinnanna kuthuru).. but maradalu..
