With melting ice caps, polar north shipping channels are opening up. These are mainly within the archipelago of Canada's Nunavut territory. This northern route is critical for East Asia to east coast and Europe to west coast shipping routes....with much shorter distances than the Panama canal.

Panama - chinese companies tried to grab entire canal operations so that they can exert control on US ships. so US woke up and pushed panama to end china control. they will take back  panama.
