Life is not that bad if you know your winter protection, solo trip itself is not that bad.

Either he got into a car crash with a rookie Uber driver and got burrowed into a roadsides for the worse. Or got mugged and ditched (crime rate is peaks in Alaska, unlike rest of the country, often overlooked).

Might be stuck in a remote motel that barely has heat going for itself and is unable to connect online / landlines still work unless he lost phone or luggage, however 1 week is too long. This is less likely. 

Hope he didn't try to camp looking at some crazy local folk YouTube channels. Desi body won't support. Hopefully not another YouTube content craze.
