Kolkata is a hinterland city, away from estuary and mangrove forests. FYI Kolkata was also not built but evolved over centuries. Once these so called huge cities started along the river banks and then we have no idea about the pollution and its ill effect. 

Modern cities cannot be built along the sensitive ecosystems like delta and flatlands before the river meets the sea. Krishna is a major river.

Like I said, No modern city us built on a river bank. Modern city…ante which came into existence in the last 30-40-50 years. Houston has been around for centuries and settlement was continuous for the past 200-300 years. Houston river bank
