A 34-year-old software engineer, identified as Sharmila Kushalappa, was found dead after a fire broke out at her flat in Subramanya Layout on the night of January 3. What initially started as a late-night fire accident in an apartment in East Bengaluru has now been confirmed as a case of murder.

At first, it was believed that the fire was caused by a short circuit. However, forensic examination later revealed that she had been suffocated to death and that the fire was set to destroy evidence.

The victim, who hailed from Dakshina Kannada, worked for a prominent tech company

An 18-year-old PUC student has also been arrested in connection with the crime. He lived with his mother next door. On the day of the incident, he allegedly entered the victim’s flat through a sliding window at around 9 PM.

According to investigators, the accused allegedly entered her flat, demanded sexual favours and killed her when she resisted.

Police said the accused allegedly pinned her down and covered her mouth and nose, causing her to lose consciousness. During the assault, she sustained a minor injury and began bleeding.

He later gathered her clothes and other items from the room, placed them on the bed, and set them on fire in an attempt to destroy evidence. He then fled the flat, taking the victim’s mobile phone with him.

He is also accused of setting the flat on fire after the murder and fleeing with her mobile phone. The accused has been remanded to three days of police custody, and further investigation is underway.
