The question in the N400 does not specifically ask you for a speeding ticket.

It asks have you "ever" received a citation - be it for speeding, DUI, DWI or for any other reason. Once they use the word "ever" the answer should be a "yes" irrespective of the fact that later you got it reduced to a lesser charge etc.,

Yes, I would check that as Yes and explain what that ticket is all about, speeding tickets are not big deal.

Thank you for adding in this additional detail. This is exactly what I did. I added a detailed note as to how I dealt with the speeding ticket to the point of its eventual resolution  i.e, going to the court, getting the charge reduced, taking defensive driving classes and the erasure of the improper driving charge from my driving record. I had explained all of this in great detail with all the proofs, receipts etc.,

Whats the use of going to court and reduce it (by paying more money than the citation fine), when you declare the original citation?

Me going to the court had "zero" connection with my citizenship application.  Because the citation and the court appearance happened many years before I chose to apply for citizenship.

As an immigrant I wanted to demonstrate that I made a mistake and took all the necessary steps to redress the situation.  I knew it will absolutely work in my favor. And it probably did during the time of my citizenship interview with the officer - because it demonstrated my honesty/integrity and the fact that I did not sit idle on top of the speeding ticket - rather I proactively chose to do something about it.

Even  if I concede - in an alternate universe -  there was no benefit in doing it - there certainly is no downside in doing it.

In any case I firmly believe that worked in my favor when establishing my overall credentials at the time of citizenship.  This allowed me to speak with a lot of confidence at the citizenship interview.

@superhit3 First, congratulations on your eligibility!. Advice: Never ever lie on your N-400. Especially in this current situation. Remember, this is the final stage in your immigration world. A single mistake can cause a lot of problems. No need for an attorney unless you have a complicated criminal case. The English test, civic test, and interview are piccha light. I had a domestic violence case, which was an accidental 911 call by kids, and the cops had to raise the case as domestic violence. I had applied for naturalization and declared that I was arrested. Later, it was nullified and removed from the records. I have explained and provided all the paperwork at the interview. For me the process took about a year. That was back in 2024. Good luck!!

Maybe, brother. But I disagree with my experience and in my case. The immi aapicer has to follow the process no matter what. My N-400 interview, done in the month of June, ended with them saying they will schedule the oath ceremony. waiting after 90 days raised the ticket with immi, No response, reached senator/congressman, no response, raised ombudsman ticket/reached White House. While this was in the process, I took Ayyappa deeksha on Saturday—I got oath ceremony confirmation on Monday. Amen!! I got my US passport on the same day as the oath ceremony in 2 hours.
