ADA to develop fifth generation Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft by 2017

Hyderabad: The Aeronautical Development Agency (ADA), an autonomous organisation under the Ministry of Defence, has started working on a twin engine 5th generation stealth multirole fighter, known as the Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) to complement the light combat aircraft (LCA) Tejas and the heavy combat aircraft,Sukhoi, in the Indian Air Force.

According to PS Subramanyam, Programme Director (combat aircraft) and Director of ADA, the government has already sanctioned Rs.100 crores for the design and development of the AMCA and he is confident that the ADA will receive a further $2-billion in the next 18 months to develop two technology demonstrators and seven prototypes for the first flight test which is expected to take place in 2017.
A large part of the aircraft will be built of carbon composites  and it will also feature serpentine shaped air-intakes, internal weapon bays equipped with missiles like the Astra and other advanced missiles, in addition to stand-off and precision weapons.

A wind tunnel model of the AMCA was displayed at AeroIndia 2009. The AMCA has been designed with a very small radar cross-section which is part of the stealth technology to prevent detection by enemy radar. It  would have an operational range of 30 km and will come equipped with GTX Kaveri engine with thrust vectoring to give the aircraft  super-cruise capabilities.

According to Subramanyam, it would probably be the first medium combat aircraft in the world having a weight of 20 tonnes when compared to similar aircraft being designed by Russia and the USA that weigh 30-35 tonnes.

Indian Army Helicopter Makes Emergency Landing in Assam

An Army chopper today made an emergency landing on a paddy field on the outskirts of Jorhat in upper Assam, but there was no casualty or damage to the helicopter.

The Cheetah helicopter, with two pilots on board, was flying from Dinjan army base in Dibrugarh to Jorhat when it had to make the emergency landing at Raidong Pathar alongside the Bhogdoi river at around 9.30 am, defence sources here told PTI.

It had to land about 7 km before reaching Jorhat airport. The crew are safe and there was no damage to the helicopter which belonged to the Indian Army, they said.

A technical problem was suspected to be the cause of the emergency landing.

India boosts troop level near Tibet border

India is readying two army divisions totaling more than 36,000 troops for deployment by March along a disputed northern border with China.

The divisions are to defend against a possible Chinese attack on India's state of Arunachal Pradesh. But China, which roundly condemns the move, has been claiming for more 50 years that the area is part of its autonomous Tibet region.

The intended deployment of India's 56th Army Division was announced in November last year and it will be based in the state of Nagaland, immediately southeast of Arunachal Pradesh. The intention is to guard against a Chinese attack through Myanmar, formerly called Burma.

The other new formation, the 71st Army Division, will be based in Assam, the second of two states that borders Arunachal Pradesh to the south.

Indian Defense Ministry officials said the two infantry mountain divisions will be fully "operational with specialized equipment" by 2011.

"The two divisions are now virtually in place, with officers and soldiers already being posted for them. They are in process of getting new equipment, which includes armored personnel carriers and light Howitzers," said an unnamed defense official.

Also, a new battalion of highly mobile and versatile paramilitary Arunachal Scouts and Sikkim Scouts will be up and running by May next year. "All the men in these formations will be drawn from mountain-fit local tribesmen but the officers will be from the army, at least for a while," a corps commander said.

But Chinese officials have called the deployment unproductive and it sends the wrong signals to Beijing.

India's announcement comes three weeks before Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao's official visit to India. His trip is to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between India and China, which became a communist state in 1949 after defeating of the governing nationalist forces of Chang Kai-shek.

China and India fought a brief border war in 1962 but Chinese troops pulled back into Tibet. Since then periodic talks have taken place to ease tensions in an attempt to resolve their dispute. India and China signed a Peace and Tranquility treaty in 1993 whereby both sides were to scale down their military strengths in the area.

But despite attempts at rapprochement over the territorial issue, a large military presence by both sides close to the frontier has been maintained to varying degrees.

"Since a war with China in 1962, the Indian army has set up a total of 10 mountain divisions in the region," Wang Dehua, a Chinese expert on India at the Shanghai International Studies Center said in an article in the state run Global Times newspaper.

"Such a move aims to add chips to the upcoming China-India talks on border disputes."

Wang said, "Those hawkish groups in New Delhi are getting above themselves after the U.S. voiced support for India's bid to become a permanent member of the U.N. Security Council."

Sun Shihai of the Asia Pacific studies at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences said India's increase in troops in the region "showed its unwillingness to make a concession during the demarcation talks."

In October 2009, China strongly criticized a visit by Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to Arunachal Pradesh, the first such high level visit to the state in a decade.

Chinese foreign ministry officials said Singh ignored Beijing's sensitivities over the disputed area.

The following month, China condemned a visit to the state by the Tibetan self-exiled spiritual leader the Dalai Lama. Since he fled Tibet in 1959 when Chinese troops marched into what was an independent country, Beijing has considered the Dalai Lama a political threat who foments separatist movements within Tibet.

Beijing's condemnation his visit was business as usual, said the Dalai Lama at the time.

"It is quite usual for China to step up the campaign against me wherever I go," he said after opening a museum at a 400-year-old monastery in Tawang, at the heart of the border row between the two countries. "My visit here is non-political."

Infiltration bid foiled, Army man injured

A junior commissioned officer was Wednesday injured in a clash between Indian troops and terrorists seeking to infiltrate into the Indian territory at the Line of Control in Mendhar area of Poonch district in Jammu and Kashmir.

The Indian Army said it was successful in foiling a major infiltration attempt from across the LoC. Army sources said the infiltration bid was made from Krishnaghati sector in Mendhar area.

According to sources, the troops Wednesday detected movement of terrorists along the LoC that divides Jammu and Kashmir between India and Pakistan. They challenged the intruders who opened fire injuring a junior commissioned officer.

The Indian troops retaliated. The exchange of firing lasted a while after which the intruders retreated into Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, the sources said.

The vigil along the LoC has been heightened.

Kadet Defence Systems to develop India’s first tactical UAV

Indian unmanned air vehicle manufacturer, Kadet Defence Systems is developing a Tactical UAV with an eye on mining and prospecting uses and military and homeland security applications. The company says negotiations are under way with an undisclosed country for using the UAV in its mineral exploration program.

Christened "UAV Garuda", Avdhesh Khaitan, CEO of Kadet, says we were keen on exploring civilian applications with our products and this development gave us the impetus to develop Garuda. "India should be in the market soon for a tactical UAV in which case we would be able to offer a mature market ready product," he says.

Consolidating from the contract win for its JX2 Aerial Target to be used by the Army Air Defence, this development would aid our efforts to lead in the Indian market with indigenously developed products and would offer a Brigade Commander his personal "eye in the sky", says Khaitan. We are expecting to perform airframe test flights in early December.

The Kolkata based company has selected the popular twin boom design over a large blended wing body design as payload integration is easier. Sea variants of the UAV Garuda shall also be developed with launch and sea recovery capabilities.

UAV Garuda will have an endurance of over 6 hours with a range of 200 Km. Khaitan says the aircraft will be equipped for ISR and also be used as a Primary UAV for its other smaller in development air launched UAV's.

India ups Lanka aid to offset China presence

NEW DELHI: Days after Sri Lanka president Mahinda Rajapaksa opened the Chinese-built port in Hambantota for business, India will be opening its consulate in the southern Lankan city. Foreign minister S M Krishna will be in Sri Lanka over the weekend to do a couple of things — open consulates not just in Hambantota but in Jaffna as well — and send a message that with India's expanding presence in the island nation, it's not playing second fiddle to the Chinese.

With two massive infrastructure projects in Sri Lanka, Hambantota and Colombo port, China had posed a direct challenge to India's influence in its strategic backyard. But with the Lanka conflict behind them, India is trying to regain its act in the island nation. Most importantly, India is reviving talks on a defence agreement with Sri Lanka, an agreement that was essentially in limbo when the conflict was underway. In July, the Indian Navy chief Admiral Nirmal Verma was in Sri Lanka and his counterpart returned the visit recently, a sign senior officials interpreted to mean as reviving the defence ties.

It's unlikely India will be able to match the scale and efficiency of the infrastructure projects that China can execute — for unlike China, India cannot command its companies to undertake "strategic interest" projects in foreign countries, and the public sector does not have the capability. Nevertheless, India is financing the construction of the northern railway in Sri Lanka from Omanthai to Palali and from Medawachchiya to Mannar through Medu, as well as developing the port of Kankesanthurai.

But India's footprint is more in the reconstruction effort in northern Sri Lanka. It's in helping to demine acres and acres of thickly forested land in Mullaitivu, which helps the internally displaced people (IDPs) (seven teams are at work there), helping them rebuild their lives with seeds, tractors, agri implements, housing materials — basically, all the elements needed to restart lives in the erstwhile LTTE strongholds, now recovering from the war. However, LTTE remains on the banned list of the Indian government. In a sign that India continues to consider it a threat, the home ministry recently renewed its ban in the country.
