Brussels, Dec 9: India will not make any compromise in the trade-related aspects of Intellectual Property Rights in the free trade agreement being negotiated with the EU that will impact the country's ability to produce and export life-saving generic drugs to developing and least developed countries, official sources said today.

Government sources said India will ensure that the comprehensive bilateral investment and trade agreement will not result in an intellectual property regime that are by far more stringent than the TRIPS regime of the World Trade Organisation (WTO).

The Indian approach came on the eve of the India-EU Trade Summit here amid indications by the European Union that an understanding has been reached between the two sides on the contentious issue of the chapter on Intellectual Property Regime.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh will attend the summit.

The EU has indicated that it was open to changing the regulation on generic drug seizures.
