Director Radha Mohan had wowed the audiences with the intracacies of human emotions in Aakasamantha. Gaganam is his second bilingual whose duration is shorter, a little less than two hours. The film is a hijack drama of a domestic plane, that makes an emergency landing at the Tirupati airport. All hijack movies are shown as action thrillers but here the director crafts the story around the trauma of the passengers, their reactions and emotions and gives a direct message that terror can strike anytime, any place, any form. It shares a similiarity with Eenadu wherein the film progresses from a single closed atmosphere with more focus on conversations.

It doesn't take long for the drama to build and as the plane is hijacked within fifteen minutes and the passengers on board begin to demonstrate their fears and open their minds to the viewers, The passengers are an eclectic mix of politicians, film stars, people from all walks of life, of all ages, of people in love and in stressed relationships. Sources cite that the story is a fictionalized account of the book 'Flight Into Fear' by Captain Devi Sharan. The movie is definitely not based on the Kandahar incident says the director and adds that it has the highest production values.

The Tirupati airport set has been recreated at Ramoji Film City and it has been done with such perfection that the entire tarmac could be mistaken for the original one, ditto with the flight interiors. It has been shot on multiple RED, on SI2K, on still camera that can shoot video. KV Guhan who is known for using excessive light in his previous film has gone unconventional and managed with whatever available light to give it a natural look. He had roped in a RED camera supervisor on location and on location editor for the director.

Since the camera couldn't be moved inside the set of an aircraft, miniature cameras, the size of a still camera, of 1.5 kilos was put into use. As they were shooting digital, they had lot of footage to play with, which helped them in the edit process. Radha Mohan specifies that the schedule in Kullu Manali is a visual treat. The post-production has been done in Mumbai. It is probably due to the lot of time spent on the extensive visual effects, CG, the film has been delayed. Rehman's background score is done by his assistant.

The bad news is Nagarjuna doesn't interact with any of the women, there is no scope for romance, song and dance however there is some unintended comic relief springing out of the panic situation. He plays an intelligent police officer, his tricks, his spontaneity and the way he plays on the psyche of the terrorists keeps the viewers hooked to the seats. Infact all the characters are important and can't pinpoint that Nagarjuna is the hero. Prakash Raj plays the role of a bureaucrat from the Prime Minister's office. He negotiates with the media and the terrorists, the government develops his role along with Nagarjuna.

The film has been titled Payanam in Tamil. So watch out for the plot unfolding in the sky sitting hostaged in your seat wondering how it would be if you were to spend five days in captivity.
