President Pratibha Patil will confer the Presidential Standard and Colours to the Indian Air Force’s (IAF) 31 Squadron of Sukho-30 MkI fighter jets and the 9 Base Repair Depot (BRD) respectively in Pune on Saturday.

The Presidential Standard is a merit award given to a flying unit of the IAF for distinguished service to the nation, while the Presidential Colours are given to an IAF ground unit for similar reasons.

In a press conference held at the IAF base in Lohegaon on Tuesday, Air Marshal Anjan Kumar Gogoi, air officer commanding-in-chief (AOC-in-C), South Western Command, commended the achievements of the two units.

The Air Marshal also spelt out the aims and objectives of the IAF. “Our air force has no aggressive designs. We are essentially a defence-oriented air force, but have the ability to strike against any adversary,” the Air Marshal said.

Wing Commander Ashutosh Srivastav, commanding officer of 31 Squadron, also known as ‘The Lions’, told media persons that he was honoured to be in charge of the squadron when it was being conferred with the President’s Standard.

Likewise, Air Commodore BR Chandran, air officer commanding of 9 BRD, said he was happy that his unit was only the second maintenance command unit in the country to be awarded the President’s Colours.

The presidential visit on Saturday will see an elaborate parade, a fly past and an aerobatics show by the Sukhoi-30 MkIs at the Lohegaon air base
