HUBLI: Soaring prices of onions and garlic in the market seems to have caught the attention of thieves, who are now eyeing vegetable shops to steal onions and garlic, which are in huge demand in the market.

Thieves targeted a vegetable shop and stole onions and garlic in Bidar. They struck the Bharat Vegetable Shop at Harogeri cross in the wee hours of Monday gained entered into the shop by removing its tin roof. They did not touch any other commodity, except the onions and garlic in the shop, said vegetable seller, Abdul Gani.

Though there were other vegetables in the shop, thieves made away with two gunny bags each of onion and garlic. Each gunny bag contains around 50 kg of onion and 50 kg of garlic, he added.

With the prices of garlic hovering around Rs 300 to 350 per kg and onions at Rs 50 to 60 per kg in the market, thieves are apparently finding it a better bet than other valuables.

Speaking to `The Times of India,' Gani said he was shocked to find the onion and garlic bags missing when he opened the shop in the morning. "We had two bags of onions and two bags of garlic but they are stolen now. A few days ago an attempt was made to burgle the shop next to mine. May be they were looking for onions there too. But he does not sell them," he said. The thieves may sell them in other cities at higher prices, he added.

"We have lodged a complaint with the Gandhiganj police station. We want the police to trace the thieves immediately," he added.

Onion and garlic merchants in the city have requested the police to provide security for their shops, after the theft.
