It looks like a high-tech Slinky straight out of a sci-film. But Russian architect Alexander Remizov believes the prototype design he calls The Ark is the answer to dealing with climate change and natural disasters.

The structure, or biosphere, is designed to withstand floods, earthquakes and tornadoes.

It is made out of wood, steel, high-tech plastic, and solar panels, and could be used as housing or a hotel, said Remizov, who heads the Moscow-based architectural firm Remistudio.

The 51-year-old describes his design as a fusion of architecture and science, and says the structure would not pollute the environment.

The Ark could be built on land or water, and be scaled to house between 50 and 10,000 people.

Flowers and plants would be housed in the structure, as would be water tanks and hot and cold storage. It would use a combination of wind, solar and thermal energy.

“I like the idea of creating an independent-from-power-networks building that can be constructed in the most beautiful places, including the water surface, while respecting the environment,” Remizov said in an email interview with the Star.

“The building (would have an) organized community which has everything necessary for its prosperity and growth.”

Remizov worked with colleague Lev Britvin to develop The Ark in connection with the International Union of Architects’ Disaster Relief program.

Part of the union’s “Architecture and Renewable Energy Sources” program, he said the experiences of quick construction of buildings in extreme conditions and the use of alternative energy sources gained from the program were also taken into account when creating The Ark.

The design is independent of any external support systems, such as hydro or electricity, allowing the structure to exist in any climate.

Remizov is in discussions with investors to create a real-life version of his prototype.

“I think that The Ark is a new prototype in the development of green architecture,” he said.

With the help of the architect union’s Russian Council of Sustainable Buildings, he added, The Ark will one day be realized.
