PHNOM PENH: Cambodian police have arrested a woman for selling dung claiming
it was from a sacred cow and could cure a range of ills including AIDS, a
report said on Friday.

You Kimchon, 47, was was vending the smelly "medecine" to people in a market
in Phnom Penh, when police swooped on her stall, the Khmer-language Rasmei
Kampuchea newspaper said.

"The lady arrested claimed that the spirits of Phreah Ko and Phreah Keo had
entered her and the cow she bought from farmers in Pursat province," it
said.

Phreah Ko and Phreah Keo are the names of two brothers, one who takes the
form of a cow and the other a human in Cambodian legend.

"The spirits told me to use their sacred power to cure people suffering from
all kinds of diseases and those who are living in misery," You Kimchon was
quoted as saying.

The paper said her cow dung packed in small plastic bags was selling well at
3000 riel ($0.80) a pack, more than a day's earnings for many poor
Cambodians.

The report said the woman confessed to having sold cow dung at a handsome
profit in a number of other provinces.

According to the lady, the dung can be mixed with water for drinking or
sprinkled over the body. (AFP)
